Thinking about getting Henry US Survival .22 rifle for backpacking, camping, and general backyard target shooting.

Have any used one of these before? What was your overall opinion of it?

Also, is there much difference in quality between the Henry Survival and the older Armalite Explorer?

Don't do it. I have sold many of these over the years and can attest to their low quality. For a packable "survival rifle" it's ok, but short of an "end of the world scenerio where this was my only option" I wouldn't have one.

Get a Marlin 925R if you want a plain vanilla bolt .22lr with a synthetic stock. CZ 452 if you want a nicer bolt action. Marlin model 60 if you want a semi. Ruger 10/22 if you want to spend a few more $$ on a semi.

can't atest to their quality, but i think they're kewl.

remember too, that if you can pack it and its more likely to come with you...it's the right one, cuz even a so-so gun is better than no gun at all.

They are rough but quite serviceable....nothing else like them though so if thats what you want your kinda stuck....The marlin "pappose" that bearbait posted is a close alternative and made better.

I wouldn't buy one again, they are pretty cool but could be made a lot better for the price. I've had mine maybe 2-3 years and hardly used it. Since being in the safe the cover over the butt of the stock has broken and won't stay on. Good idea for a gun but poorly built.

The 10/22 is 27 inches folded. It fits into a backpack pretty nicely. I have a Mini 14 folder and it is similar in size but a lot heavier.

It is a Butler Creek. I have one on my Mini-14 Ranch rifle too. They work well. And they come in SS to match the guns.

Yes. They're great on a mini-14. :D

The only ones I've seen for an AK are the stock folders- under and side folders- and I don't like the looks or fit of them, and the plastic ones. I'd like a 'skull bashing strength stock' and the butler creek one should be good enough. Plus, I already have it, so it'll save a few bucks on a build. I can put the wood stock back on the .22. :D

Is a rifle really a neccesity? Why not a good accurate pistol, like a ruger Mk II? I think you can get buttstocks for these?

I don't think that any pistol is accurate im my hands. I am much more comfortable with a rifle.

Someone makes a quick takedown kit for a 10-22 that would render it shorter than just with a folder and the Butler Creek carbon fiber barrel knocks alot of weight off. The Butler Creek barrel is fairly inexpensive also.

When I was looking for a survival rifle, it had to be light weight, sturdy, and I had to bwe able to carry it while doing many differrent activities, such as hiking, dirt biking, etc... basically anything outdoors. I then found the M6 Scout. As seen here.

It is single shot, but with the .22 LR/410 shot it was perfect for multiple situations. Read the article and check them out. You wont be disappointed.

You can usually get them for around $200.
