Is there any easy way to get this thing off without taking out the head itself? I can only barely reach foru of the bolts, I think there are six bolts. Its leakin real bad and think the plate has a craxk in it which aint no good. Its for the 22re out of a 88 4runner.

There are only for bolts but you have to be a contortionist to reach them without pulling the head. Have fun.:D

Only four bolts to get off. Easy way to get better acess to these bolts is:
1) Unbolt exhaust from from manifold.
2) Support the engine with a floor jack, using a block of wood between the jack and oil pan.
3) Remove motormount bolts from the block.
4) Remove steering stabilizer.
5) Lower engine until the oil pan is resting on the crossmember.
On my 86' 22r (don't know how close that plate is to your re), I was able to undo the four bolts with out lowering the engine- All it took was a long handled ratchet with a tilting head, a 12mm socket- and a lot of patience.... feel around back there- see with your hands, daniel son...
What a PITA- good luck-

You don't need to remove anything but the plate to fix the problem. You need a wrench and the tilting ratchet is nice. It is a total bitch to replace. You might have to get some of the gasket in a roll from an auto parts store and make your own gasket, I think the only way to get the gasket is in a kit, you might be able to get it stand alone from the dealer. I made my own and it works just fine. Some 22re's have a plate w/o the passage. next time you are at pick n pull reach back and giver a feel. it's flat. it makes aligning the part so much easier. If you fixed it then you know what i mean.
