Guess that would be important....any opinions on this tank and does anyone out there have or had any problems getting a tank filled they didn't buy from their local welding gas supplier?? Thanks

I guess it all depends on where you go. One place here wont exchange my torch tanks because they are not weldstar tanks. So I have to go somewhere else. Check with your local shops and see what tanks they will take.

Here’s my opinion on it. If you are going to buy your own new tank I would have it filled but not exchanged. It might take a few days but for a new tank it’s worth it. You know you will getting your new tank back. If you exchange it you are not only getting whatever they exchange for it but you seem to be stuck staying with the same place in order to keep their guarantee. When your tank is older and close to the expiration it might be a better option.
Two other places you can check out are cyberweld.com (http://www.cyberweld.com)or indianaoxygensupply (http://www.indianaoxygensupply.com). They both have free shipping.
I have a 40CF tank and wish I had gone bigger. I might buy a second one so I can swap back and forth.
I bought a 40 from cyberweld a few years back and quickly realized it was too small for what I do. My local welding/gas supplier took it in trade when I asked to up to full size.
edit: might have been an 80, whatever cyberweld sells online.

Here I could not get it filled without exchange. We used to have like 12 or so shops to fill them, but in the last 4 years we lost 4 metal supply houses and all but 2 weldling supply houses, so I have to live with what they get. I got my tank and it was a used model (one of their exchangers) and it was full for only $160 (80cf). Your price seems high. But if I was to buy a new one I would deffinately want to get it filled, not exchanged.
BTW, it sucks to run out of gas and have to wait to fill it since it always happens on saturday evening when you have to wait for the place to open so another small tank would be nice to have around.

The place I deal with requires the tank be tested if it isn't one of theirs - so it is about a wash...

That's bullshit, I hope they don't charge you for this! The tanks have expiration dates and unless the tank looks like it was left outside and rusted to shit they should just fill it. I bought my tank but just exchange it when I need a new one, that way I ALWAYS have a tank with a good expiration date.
Next refill I will pay to go up in size as well, a second smaller just in case tank is in the future as well.
Most will exchange for a full cylinder to save you a trip.
It doesnt make sence to buy a new tank and exchange it for an old one.

I have one tank I bought and one that I leased. When I get them filled, they exchange them both. The one I bought was used when I bought, so no big deal. I never have to worry about the tests.
When the lease is up on the leased one in 2009, I'll buy another tank.

Either tommorow of Monday I will go to the two local places and see what they wanna do as a deal when I wialk in with cash....Thanks guys...
When I buy tanks, they've provided me with paperwork indicating I have a title to "a tank," it's not a specific tank, but a tank in the size that I purchased. When it's empty, I bring it in and exchange it for another... Some look new, some look not so new and frankly - I don't care what the hell it looks like as it's the gas I want. I never have to worry about tank inspections, cert dates, etc. I just pay for refills and the last time, IIRC, it cost me like $88 for refilled fullsize 75/25. My other gases don't get used as much as the 75/25.

I got my 80cf local with a fill, 2lb spool of wire and a few contact tips for $160. Indiana Oxygen is also local to me, this place ended up being a little cheaper, but I don't remember it being TOO far off. That is WAY to much to pay. IIRC they told me it was ~$20 or $25 for a fill.

Have to admit that the tanks I've bought have been through public sales and such. I suppose it would be different for a brand new tank. Never thought about it.

If you can afford to wait possibly a few days for your tank to be refilled than sure, also realize your tank will expire someday and you will have to buy a new one.
Buying a tank and just exhanging it each time saves you the cost of a lease each year, like 69CJ said who cares what the tank looks like as long as it has the gas you need.

Lay you odds that by the time you add shipping from the eBay source it is higher than the local place. I. like most of the others prefer a local distributor.

Ok here is my next stupid question....Is there some sort of label or stamp or?? that indicates what tank can be used for what??? I found some used tanks near my house but want to make sure I can use them before I drop the cash...Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, no there isn't much difference. I could be wrong though. The tanks I have for mix are the same as oxygen, just a different sticker on it. When I first got a welders years ago I bought a new tank from Harbor Freight, nice and cheap. Took it in empty and exchanged for a full one, pretty simple. Think that was an 80 bottle, hell now I have three 250's.
sometimes you'll see label affixed to a tank which will make it easy to determine what the tank is presently configured to hold, other times it's the difference in valve assemblies that will give you a clue.

Just bought an 83 cubic foot tank today at Praxair - or as mentioned above, I bought the rights to a tank, it's not brand new.
Tank with the first fill was $145.
