2 is the front end full time?
3 it doesn't want to come out of 4wheel all the time what could it be?
thanks for any help

iv got 1 more question

well i did a brake job on it today and noticed that i could not rotate the axle without turning the drive line like it had a spool( same in p, n, tcase in n) do the durangos come with a limited slip? what gear oil is recomended?

1. Yes, you can switch in and out of 2h-4h any time. Going to 4L you do need to be stopped or at a crawl.
2. Yup, its full time.
3. Any modifications? On mine, the body lift kinda interferes a bit. I need to trim the hole some. Oh, and is your tcase manual or electronic shift?

Trying to get it out of 4wd:

Try putting it in reverse and going back 10 feet.
If it doesn't work the first time, it likely will on the 2nd or 3rd try. ;)

we did that but it doesn't work all the time

if it feels like it's locked in 4x4, try shifting while rolling and swerving back and forth a bit. it's probably just a bit of bind in the driveline so if you get the front and back going slightly different speeds it should loosen up. sort of like getting your hubs to unlock with a locker in the front - gotta get them to unbind before they'll actually move and unlock.

Don't know about your expirience adam but I think the backing up trick is just for auto locking hubs (as opposed to the full time locked frontend the ~'94+ dodges have)

Hey if its not modified and you want to I got a 5.5 lift and 4:56 gears that we could slam under it for cheap. For not coming out of 4 wheel , mine did the same but it just seamed like it was sticking in 4 right?

do the reverse thing but put it into neutral when your stil rolling back a little bit and it should slide right out of that gear.

I used to have to rock the damn thing to get my np205 to unlock.

On our 2000, the 4wd is NOT full time 4wd!!! It's part time!

So, unless it says full time 4wd on the shifter... assume it is part time.

I haven't had the sticky issue... although try shifting it out of hi-range while in neutral.

weve tried shifting in n,p, t-case in gear and n. the shifter moves like it should but the axle stays ingauged. any one help on the second question?

limited slip was available.

with a limited slip, with the trans in park and the tcase engaged if you can put enough torque on it the opposite tire will spin backwards, but it should take more than 120 foot pounds if I'm remembering my FSM correctly.

it's got either a part time or a full time case in it. your shifter positions will be something like 2-4h-N-4l with the part time, and awd-lock-N-4l with the full time case. you could also read the tag on the case to see if it's a 231 or a 242.

if the shifter lever is moving, is your linkage hooked up? you should not be able to move a mechanical shift lever and have the tcase not respond unless something, somewhere, is broken.

there also should nearly never be bind going between 2h and 4h, the sun visor instructions say it's fine to do so up to 55mph in a stock truck. you do have the same size tires front and back on this thing, right?

yes it has same tires.
yes its a part time t case
yes the linkage is working

say u take it out of 4hi

1stop 2n 3shift t case 4r 5drive it feels like the front is still engaged

now if u back up 20ft then go forward and then back up doing a brake stand it just backs up but but once it finaly comes out it will do a brake stand we done this once

well if the linkage is working, it's coming out of 4h unless there's something broken. it's a collar inside the tcase with solid linkages to the shift arm. I have no idea how it could be doing what you describe unless there's something bending or out of place in the shifter linkage.

good luck!
