: Engine swap on 1989 toy, need help!!
brentryll 04-06-2002, 03:22 PM Here's a dandy of a question for you, I hope someone can help me out. I have a 1989 Toyota 4x4 Extended cab with a 3.0L V6 in it. I have recently "purchased" a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 extended cab with a 3.4L V6. I'm wondering if there's any way I could put the 3.4L engine into the 1989 Toyota??? If the conversion is capable, what other parts will I have to change besides the engine? (examples:: tranny, transfer case, power steering, AC, heater, drive shaft, etc???). Anyone who knows of anybody who has done this, please contact me because I need all the information I can get. Thanks.
SeaBass44 04-06-2002, 03:36 PM nice 1st post, did u try our search feature? ok look I'm not going to search for u, do a search and u will find a guy that did it to a 84-89 4runner over at http://66.216.68.23/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=11 I don't have the direct link but don't be a lazy ass and use search, and yes u will find some info. it's a real new swap so u won't find every answer by some.
SeaBass44 04-06-2002, 03:39 PM I'll be nice here is the link...http://66.216.68.23/4x4/toyota/projects/basham_4runner/
brentryll 04-06-2002, 07:27 PM Thanks a lot for the advice as I am new to this.
I've heard a lot of things about this engine swap about how the 3.4L exhaust and fuel lines are on opposite sides from the 3.0L. How do you run the exhaust and fuel lines from the engine(3.4) to the ones already on the truck??
brentryll 04-06-2002, 07:29 PM oh, and thanks for all your help at this also as I am only 17 years old and can use all the help I can get!!!
muppetz3 04-07-2002, 04:21 PM Hey well im 20 and have had my truck since i was about 18. Its not worth trying to get a 3.4l in it. All i did was rebuild the v6(mistake) Just pick up a 350 and drop it in. Thats what i did to my 86, and its a lot of work to try to do when its your first time. I am doing a lot of things over and over. And im sure i will break a ton of crap and then find out i did it wrong. But this board has tought me everything i know. I didnt even know what a locker is before i came on here, now im making my own steering arms! You learn a lot from here, it just make take a bit.

I second this. I'm also 20, had my truck since I was 16, my tired motor is going, but instead of dump money, I'm gonna baby it until I can get a V8 in it. It will be work, but it will be waaaay cheaper than a 3.4L swap, and more power, too.
brentryll 04-07-2002, 05:57 PM I am not really interrested in putting a V8 into my toyota as I really don't need tons of extra power, I just need a little bit of it. And plus I own everything of the 1997 Tacoma that has the 3.4L in it so money is not an issue of that. And plus I have heard a lot of great things about the 3.4L and I am really pleased about the toyota engines. But thatnks for advice anyways.
grshpr 04-07-2002, 06:21 PM What are you going to do with the 97' after you pull the motor out? If you are going to put a 3.4 in your 89 I would do this, sell the 97 for what ever they go for then buy a motor from a pick-n-pull. Then with the extra money you will have from selling the truck you can do more mods. Just a thought??

Just a guess here but, I don't think he is ripping the motor from a good truck, likly a rollover orwrecked.....don't ya think? I mean would U go buy a $2000 motor or strip a $12,000 truck to get it?
CRAZY MATT 04-07-2002, 11:47 PM The 3.4 really don't make all that much power from what I could tell - I've driven prooly 40 taco's with the 3.4 - im not really impressed - id go chevy power instead - cheaper and more power in the end
I wish I would did a chevy swap, instead of souping up al my R-series

Whatever, just put some "Type-R" stickers on there, you'll get all the power you need!
bosco 04-08-2002, 06:19 AM Hey, I am 21 and have had my 84 ext cab since I was 18 as well. You will learn a ton from the bb and from my learnings so far I think that 3.4L is way to go as well. That is what I hope to put in mine soon. Its lighter, better mileage, not too much power, and if you need more just add the TRD supercharger! I am going to put one on my fiance's 2001 4-door TRD 4WD hopefully by the end of summer so I will let every one know how it performs when I do. Other than that Happy Swapping!:D
brentryll 04-08-2002, 07:10 PM Actually the Tacoma was in an accident so that's why I'm concidering the engine swap, and thanks a lot for the supercharger idea as I may just do that if I dont think I have enough power or for the hell of it.
