Hello oh educated and elegant citizens of pirate.
my (stock) 9/1975 fj40 has been having carb problems forever. I finally decided i wanted a brand new carb, and went the SOR route, purchasing the 38/38 weber, with the gas pedel/cable setup included. Well, it turns out the pedal/cable assembly is far from plug and play, and needs modifcation to work. Aside from that, there is such a severe angulation with the cable (90 degrees), that it's bound to wear through the cable casing in a short period of time.

A call was placed to specter, they said, basically, that is all they sell, and you need to modifiy it to get it to work. It seems pretty frigging strange they sell a "conversion" kit that needs modification.

Does that sound right, and is there some other better fitting linkage or cable setup i can use? The carb and cable install is being done by a real auto place in phoenix, and they usually know what they are doing.. so i belive them if they say it doesn't fit right. comments/help?! thanks!

The only useful information I can provide is send the weber back to spector and rebuild your stock carb. Don't care for webers, ran one and I never could get it to work as good as a stock carb.

Had a weber on My 74 Slid the cable through 3/8 stainless tubing that I bent with a tubing bender reamed the ends so there was no edge worked great (till I blew the straight 6)

I have have about 18 years of exp. with webers, that is WHY I have been using a Holley 7448, spent a day tuning and jetting it.. and its been excellent.. I would suggest giving one a try.

i appreciate the opinions, but i beleive sor has a no return policy on the weber, and it's already installed. Its more a question of how to get the throttle to hook up rather than am i going to return it or convert to something else. The carb is brand new, and installed, and being worked on by an actual mechanic (rather than by me, as most of th eother mechanical work has been), so I have some faith that he can tune it correctly.

The only other option here is to rebuild (again..) my 32 yr old aisin and re install, but then i'm out the $600+ i spent for the new carb, PLUS the cost of the rebuild for the aisin... ouch..so i'm not (at this point) interested in that..

Have you considered returning the linkage and buying some universal pieces to hook up your carb? Back in the "old days", one purchased a carb and adapter directly from the Weber distributor and only the carb and adapter were included. I believe my builder went to the local odds and ends shop and found linkage pieces.
