: 1.5" 35 spline axles aren't the same??
CrazyCraig 04-06-2002, 04:37 PM I'm am in the process of building my HP 60 rear, and I was planning on using the axles and spindles off a a 10.25 sterling (I got a few of them laying around. So today I take one apart 1.5" (1.495") 35 spline axle, cool I thought it would work, mic'd the dana 60 1.495" 35 spline, same size. I try to put a 10.25 axle in the 60 carrier, won't fit. I pull the spiders off the 10.25 and the 60 shafts fit it (there is a tiny bit of play, very minute). So it appears as my plans have changed, I can't use the 10.25 parts with the 60 without getting custom axles made.
Has any one heard of this before a 1.5" 35 spline axle not fitting in a different carrier, still a 1.5 and 35 spline.
This would have been sweet to build, the 10.25 uses o-ring instead of a gasket to seal the shafts.
If no one has any suggestion, it's off to find a d 70 for parts.

MOGXJ44 04-06-2002, 04:41 PM I read a post somewhere else about this kind of thing. It has something to do with the pitch and depth of the splines. Hope this helps.
NE-RokToy 04-06-2002, 05:04 PM couldnt you use 70 shafts with the sterling spindals and hubs?

Aggro 04-06-2002, 07:26 PM Just take the spiders out and pound the axles into them, remove, rotate a few splines then redo this process, in essence re-broaching the spiders and fitting the axles to them. just make sure to use a brass drift so as not to damage anything. Many resplines ago, I resplined a set of axles test fitting them to 30 spline 60 spiders only to find out the 30 spline 44 spiders had a different pitch angle. It was only for my rig, so I went for it with the above mentioned process. It worked out fine!! I would have re-cut them to the correct angle if they weren't for me.
if you have an abundance of 10.25 why dont you just use one of them?
Gozuki 04-06-2002, 09:13 PM Pressure angle is 5 degrees different. The 60 has a steeper angle, so will fit inside the (wider angle) sterling carrier. And, as you can see, vise versa won't work. I would run the complete 10.25/10.5 sterling, they are a bitchen rear, a little more clearance than a 60, and you can get down to 5.13s for them. Very strong too...
you can get 5.38 for the 10.25 from randys and 7.17s for the 10.25 from the ford dealer. i know randys was working on the 5.13 didnt kknow they were out yet.

I need the high pinion of the d60 and the 10.25 have a long pinion, hence a shorter rear drive shaft, and have a low pinion.
