View Full Version : Anti-sieze Vs. Brake grease
I am curious at to who is still using antisieze and who is using brake grease. For those that dont know brake grease is waterproof, hi-temp and is used heavily in the monster truck industry instead of messy anti sieze.

I've always applied anti-seize where there was any possibility of seizing or galling of the threads, mainly on spark plugs or similar heat interference bolts/nuts.
By your wording, I take it you use brake grease on pretty much everything? How does brake grease differ from white lithium grease in terms of protection, not heat rating? How is brake grease not messy?

I still use Antiseize....its messy but works good:D
We quit using antisieze just last year. Brake grease is alot easier to clean off and seems to work better for the rod ends and applications we use. Lithium grease....not sure if lithium has the ability to be used in cold weather...been a long time since my lubrication classes.

We are going to start using this grease on everything...
Same grease that Jack puts in his CTM's

I think regular lithium grease clumps up in cold weather. At least most of my store bought supply does. But I got some white lithium grease from a friend who works at a processing plant. He got from the machinist. Anyway, it's good stuff. It has very low viscosity but retains its ability to cling to metals. I don't know who makes it as it is in a plain tube with a computer printed label stating "Food grease" and some MSDS look up info.
But, I'll definitely give the brake grease a try.

so far I still use the anti-sieze in the "stick" for...no mess at all, and much easier to carry around for reassembly in the field.

Can I use brake grease for a gneral purpouse grease? Like if I need to just grease a bushing or something? How does it hold up over the long run... does it "dry out"?
Also, who makes decent stuff and how much?
Thanks

I'd be interested in how much. I am a devoted anti-sieze follower, growing up in a northern-tier salt state will do that to you after working on 20 year old rust-fused parts. Anti-sieze is like $6 for a little container, but the stuff I've used seems to last and last and last. I have no reason to change it, unless I see some type of real advantage on like spark plugs or something. Anti-sieze does seem to 'deteriorate' on long life plugs.

I use anti-seize, because I bought a large brush-bottle 15 years ago and barely went thru a quarter of it.

Yeah, that too. I have to mix it up because it seperates like peanut butter.
The brushes get all fawked up too, damned near useless. I use trimmed acid brushes for it, lot less mess.

Ive been using Caterpillars Graphite Base Anti-seize Compound.
Here's what it says:
Prevents galling and seizing
Reduces friction
Non-corrosive
Meets Mil-Spec MIL-T-5544 General Purpose
Applications:
For use during torque-turn tightening, this anti-seize compound is specifically recommended for moderate tempurature applications such as: connecting rod and main bearing cap fasteners, track shoe bolts, and off-highway truck rim bolts.
