Got the BIG Scout in the shop for a few repairs and WHOOA! We ended up cutting off the entire cage and are going to start over from scratch. Going to make a few changes/upgrades and improvements. Matt at independent4x.com (http://independent4x.com/) in Richmond, VA is doing the work. I'll post as we go....

Yeah, the rear steer has been on there for about 6 years now and works great. Bought from the Farm supply store (Atwoods) in Oklahoma for about $400 (includes pump, resevoir and remote control. The cylinder was also a Farm store grab.

As far as the steering wheel, I found that laying inthe back of a parts truck I got a few years ago. I liked it because it was considerably smaller that the stock one I had and it keeps me from hitting my knuckles on the front post of the roll cage. Is it a rare find?

Well, I dismantled the cooling system today. Removed a large portion of the floorboard and removed the rear steer pump and fuel cell. finally got around to removing the floor vents and parking brake from the firewall. Got some ideas of where to go from here. Thinking I'm going to ditch the airtank, move the radiator to just behind the front seats. Move the battery and mount the rear steer pump to the back over the rear axle. I'm moving the bumper and winch I've been running to the new street Scout so we will be building a new tube front and possibly mounting the winch behind the grill.

I worked a little on this last night and am planning on working tonight after work. Started with mounting the first new hoop which will make up the rear and did a little more carving on the firewall. I removed all the dash plaques last night and will clean them up for perhaps a wall mount plaque. They have been on there soo long, some of them are just blank alluminum plates! Going to work on building the new rockers tonight and work towards mounting the firewall. I'll post pics tonight.

They look heavier than they really are (about 10 lbs each) but hey, I am running Rockwells. I couldnt believe how heavy just the floor piece was when I removed it! I am using lighter tube this time also, but placed in much better places for a more effective design.

the Rockers are 2x5 tube...they are 4 1/2 feet on each side ....they weigh in at a little over 8#'s a foot. so total of about 75 #'s for the 2.

The rear lowers are identical to the front lowers--inch and 3/4, .250 wall DOM with 30 degree bends and 3/8 plate on top for strength. Looks ugly but with space constraints that's all I could come up with. The uppers in the rear are just "Tractor Link Joints" from the farm supply store. Cheap but easily replaceable. At the time I really couldnt afford anything else. They might me coming out soon, though. The frame ends are all using a 2" OD poly bushings which are Ford Superduty front spring bushings and the axle ends all have Johnny Joints. Havent had any probs with the suspension since it has been under there for about 6 years now. The coils are perfect for what I have. They give me full flex without being too soft and allowing body roll. My Scout seems to be pretty stable in offcamber situations to me. Here are some pics....

At first I wondered why you didn't make the engine bar curve around (behind the grill) and back to the firewall, now I see that you've stuck it through the firewall and down to the rockers as well. That would have been tricky, let alone impossible to fish through the firewall holes.

Yeah. We decided that to make it a single hoop would be too difficult to bend and I need to have removable bars in front of the engine for repairs (which will be inevitable). Well, we got the seats mounted today and bent the B-pillars and the rear deck.

Yeah, I cut about 13 inches out of the grill. I wanted to narrow the whole tub but thought it to be too much of an undertaking for me at the time. We did, however talk about narrowing the firewall now but that just wouldnt give me any room for two occupants AND the cooler so we left it alone. As far as building it again....the current number are 5 body tubs and 4 frames and 3 roll cages. I shouldnt have to replace any more tubs or frames as I think I have got that part down pretty tight and there is not much tub left anyway. But I cant promise you anything on the cage. All I can say is I just have an abusive driving style and I do have a pilots license so I'm allowed to fly:smokin:

Well, called it an early night as Matt the fabricator had to pick his wifey up at the airport (mans gotta have his priorities I guess :shake: ) We got the crossmember done for the rear floor pan to mount the feul cell. Started the mounts for the hood pins and fenders and Matt made a cool spreader plate for the top of the cage. I started cutting templates for the rear sheet metel and "adjusted" the clutch linkage for the final location of the firewall. I need some new fenders as the ones I have are too bent for mock up so that may hold me up a few days. The tabs came in today for mounting stuff so we will prolly work on that tomorrow.

Mocked up some rear panels today (recycling old rear sheetmetal) and mounted the hood. I stretched the front clip forward a few inches to gain more clearance to mount the winch behind the grill so I had to cut the lip from the back of the front fenders. Matt welded in some weld-nuts in the door post and the fender will now bolt from the outside. Not my preference but I think with panhead bolts it should be allright. The advantages outweighed the disadvantage of having bolts on the side of the fenders. made a floor pan for the rear to mount the feul cell and storage box and mocked the front floorboards out of cardboard. Discussed painting and outter body panel options and decided on a dark grey "Hammerite" for the cage and tube work but have not decided what to skin this thing with. Might change the color of the front clip as well, but not sure.

I did however, know a James West from Oklahoma. He was with us the day I was in about 6 rolls in one day in 4 different rigs. I was not in good shape by the end of the weekend. I've been trying to find a copy of the video shot that day in Missouri.

Made some progress today! Matt painted the rear part of the cage and installed the rear floor pan and deck plate. Mounted the fuel cell and pump and rear steer pump and radiator. I found a possible cause for recent overheating problems I have had-- we flushed about 3 lbs of mud from the radiator! I couldnt tell because it was in the middle of the cores and had absolutely NO flow! I hate mud. Finished cutting the two front floor pans and Matt welded in the diagonal cross brace in the b-pillar. Now we are working our way forward as we begin plumbing the radiator and fuel lines.:smokin:

Well, I mounted the new fan (stock Ford Taurus) to the radiator and we wired the fan, fuel pump and rear steer pump. I finished plumbing the fuel system and Matt mounted another rear panel. I mounted the "Trailmobile" plate on the rear and the front floorboards.

Well, we got the front finished up....plumbed the coolant hoses, mounted overflow resevoir, air filter, seats, harnesses, radiator screen and storage box. I hooked up the clutch linkage and "modified" the gas pedal to work with the new floor. All we will try to do before the trail ride this weekend is mount the shocks and install the front clip. I will get body panels later and prolly rework the shifters a bit. Cant wait to get out for the first time this year!:smokin:

Well, I made it back from Big Dogs. The Scout worked flawlessly (except for the motor running like shit). I was able to drive everything without winching or rolling.:smokin: I have some great pics but my internet is down till Monday when I can get a tech out to fix it but I can post here at work in the mean time. The wheeling was awsome but the trip home proved to be the real challenge. The new motorhome broke down a few miles from the camp ground in the middle of nowhere and I ended up spending the night on the side of the road. After canibalising the fuel system from the Scout and mounting it on the motorhome I was able to get home by Monday night. Anyway, I will get the wheeling pics up first part of the week.

Sean,

do you notice the difference in lock-to-lock with a single ended ram? Meaning, from center, how many turns does it take to get left vs. right?

The center is centered no matter what you have. I just know that it is 3 1/2 from lock to lock.
So I guess that the turns are the same left to right.

 ~ theres been some debate on this, some guys say its 1 turn to lock one way and 3 turns to lock the other. I suspected it to be bias one side, but didn't know for sure how much.

If you can't tell, then its not much of a difference anyway.

kinda weird... thought you would of had more flex then that... wouldnt guess your tire would of come off the ground that easily, just by looking at your truck... looks like the pass. shock is stoppin you from goin down any further

It is. I ordered new shocks and they didnt come in in time for the run so I painted 4 of the old ones and used them. I should have the new shocks this week.:smokin: I ended up splitting the welds on one shock and damaging the body of another.:D

After reading this alittle closer and thinking about it, it sounds as though there might be a problem in the ram or orbital valve or there is air caught in the system somewhere that is giving you insufficient pressure in one direction. But the answer to you question is no, it should have equal turns in both directions.

I'll have to disagree with you on that one Sean. Since the piston rod takes up volume on one side of the single ended ram, it is going to take more volume to move the ram one way than it does to move it back the other. Since the orbital valve displaces X cu. in/rev, it will take more turn to turn one way than it does the other.

That does sound like a good point. I really dont know.......but I did however stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night. I'm feeling smarter already! Seriously, I can only speak from the only system I have set up--mine. It has worked equally since I installed it so that is what I had based my opinion on.

Actually, now that I think about it. My ram's piston goes all the way through the body and the valve is in the middle so the volume is the same on both sides. Perhaps that is why I havent encountered this yet.

Not very often. Usually only to turn me back over! The new design on the front put the new winch behind the grill in front of the engine giving me a much better approach angle and it cleans up the look of the front end (whatever that means:shaking: ) My motto....When in doubt--power out!
