: On the trail by Summer! project RRC
roverhybrids 03-23-2006, 02:31 AM I got the OK from the wife to build up my 89 RRC. I'm in the middle of a D110 build up for a customer so it will be another month or so before I can make any real progress.
Right now I'm gathering parts and getting a game plan together.
I plan to build it to run 37" tires with the possiblities of runing 39's in the future. Most likely Q78r16 swampers for now, since I have them.
I'm building 4 links front and rear so now is the time to move the axles for the best clearance.
It seems 1" forward in the front and 3" back in the rear is about right for clearance???
Is 3" the most you can move the axle back and keep the stock tank?
How much lift for 37's(sawzall a given)?
I have a set of 14" Fox coilovers I could use but was thinking I wanted to stick with regular springs and Fox shocks.
So should I go with Rovertym 5" springs or just do the coilovers?
Drivetrain will be:
65k mile 3.9 with crower cam and NRP exhaust.
stock ZF
lt 230
Rovertracks toy conversion with hi-pinion front and V6 rear.
probably going to stay with 4.10 gears for strength and cost.
ARB/spool or ARB/ARB
Q78 r16s on wolf wheels for now
I'm trying to do this on a tight budget. Most of the choices are because I already have the parts.
SeaRover 03-23-2006, 08:45 AM << I'm trying to do this on a tight budget >>
unless you've already got one, i'd skip the NRP and use some catco's on the stock y-pipe. i think they flow about the same. just pay attention to how they're welded up - i lost about an inch of clearance at the exhaust with mine. pick your fave turbo muffler from summit and have Mr. Muffler or who ever weld it up and tuck the pipe out of the way.
rest sounds cool. i'd prolly use the coilovers if you can afford it. if you move the rear axle back 3" you're going to have to fawk with moving the coil buckets on the frame and all that jazz ... your labor is probably worth exchanging for the coilovers at that point.

Serious One 03-23-2006, 08:46 AM I'm trying to do this on a tight budget. Most of the choices are because I already have the parts.
Then you definitely don't need to make any excuses for your choices!
roverhybrids 03-23-2006, 09:54 AM From the specific parts I listed above, only the toy axle parts from Rovertracks and lockers are all that I'm missing.
Areas of dilemma are:
springs or coilovers?(have the coilovers already)
If springs which ones?
I have a pair of 764's I could use up front with some spacers, but would still need something in the rear.
The next area is the rear axle. I'm not real confident in the toy stuff in the rear, but R&P for the rear is cheap........I can do a 9" rear but that will add at least $1000
madcowdungbeetle 03-23-2006, 10:47 AM If you're going to go with front and rear 4-links, use the coilovers, you will thank yourself once you start fabbing.
Jack Straw 03-23-2006, 11:02 AM If you got the coilovers, I vote use em. If you're leaving the body as is you'll need to have them come through your cab inside of the rear wells. Another benefit is that you'll have that much more adjustment if you decide to go to the 39's.
roverhybrids 03-23-2006, 03:37 PM coilovers it is!
Now I may need to rethink the toy rear..........
Junkyddog11 03-23-2006, 05:34 PM I built a RRc for a customer with 37 x 12.5's. Didn't move the axles at all.
RTE 5"springs, 14" Fox 2.0 shocks, SG 3 link front, RTE arms rear.ARB's.4'75's. Only tyre clearance problem other than the regular sort of cutting a Rangie deserves was at the back of the front wheelwells, which had to be moved in about 3" or so from the outside corner to nothing in the middle. And if you use wolf rims you'll have to use a spacer or have a lot of inner sidewall rub on the springs. I'd suppose the coilovers would solve that. The thing goes really well, no four link monkey business. Does 75 on the road all day and crawls around with the best (east coast style). It will be getting Rovertraks Toy stuff and Hiem linked rear arms shortly.
I'm looking forward to seeing the front 4 link. I've often thought about that but the three link works so well I just haven't bothered. That, and I'm just not that fawkin' smart!

revor 03-23-2006, 07:36 PM I have a very interesting set of RTE 5" longer super soft springs... They where off a 90 that ended up not liking the fact that they where so mushy..
BUT the truck had ranchos... Might be worth fooling around with.. Pay the shipping..

If they were too soft on a 90. Won't they make a RRC feel like the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland? :flipoff2:
PTSchram 03-23-2006, 07:58 PM If you stay Toy, spool the rear and save the $ for other stuff.
If you wanna go 9", I have two centers back in FWA that I'm sure we could come to an agreement over.
If you don't take Keith's springs, I want them! :flipoff2:
(I'm off to continue compression testing and heli-coiling :grinpimp:)
roverhybrids 03-24-2006, 02:36 PM I've commited to the coilovers.
So thanks for the offer Kieth on the springs.
PT pm me with some details on the 9" 3rds

I moved my axle back 2" and my tank skid plate had to be trimmed because it was hitting the tank. You have the same small tank as me so expect the same. 3" will be cutting it very close. My deparure angle is killer for a truck that hasn't been bobbed.
Also, I'm running about 5" of lift to clear my tires. With the exception of the front inner wheel wells I could clear up to about a 39" tire. I'm thinking next time I need tire I just might go to 40's. But then again that will likely be 2 years away.

I think you are at the point of either getting an old 2dr RRC or doing some sweet custom sheet metal work on the rear doors. Totally remove the ft inner fenders.
I have a RRC with 37" tires. If you trim enough you do not need to move the axle forward. I would recommend it however as it would help your approach angle. One of the problems I do not see stated above is that with 37" tires, you need to figure something out on the steering. I broke several power steering boxes with my 37" tires prior to going hydraulic assist.
On the rear, I moved my axle back 4" making the wheelbase ~104" total. I have been very happy with this. It makes the departure angle much better. The relocation of the rear axle can simply be done by making an extension on the rear center link and making longer control arms. I did this and found I liked it quite a bit. If I had it to do over, getting rid of the rover link and center link set up in favor of a 4-link sounds way better. I am now doing coilovers as well in the back. I have no complaints about relocating the lower spring mount (kept the uppers the same), but I found that the aluminum extension plates I mounted put a lot of stress on the stock axle bracketry.
Sounds like a great project. Looking forward to watching the build.

Edit: I know where you can get a great swing out tire carrier and rear bumper to hold up to a 40" tire! :flipoff2:
Junkyddog11 03-25-2006, 04:44 AM Man...you guys have it good. 'Round here (Maine) we can only run tyres (leagally) 2 sizes over stock. You can't modify vehicles that have ABS AT ALL!
Pretty much sucks to try and run a legitimate mod shop. I have to have all customers sign a waiver stating that anything I do is designed for offroad use only. Luckily most of my customers are out of state. I don't run on anything bigger than 35"s and I know most of the local POlice who look the other way,:shaking: then I run a set of stock tyres to get the annual inspection:flipoff2:

Sorry, no can do. Ike ruined it for us, when I came to Oregon, they met me at the border and said I was the last Rover freak from East of the Mississippi they were letting in.
I'm not sure what Ike did, but I'm glad I got in while I could:flipoff2:
BTW-it was on the radio yesterday that Oregon is adopting CARB air rules...

SeaRover 03-25-2006, 11:19 AM no offense - but i just can't get excited about a frame with wheels :flipoff2: where's the rest of the truck?!
j/k ...
there are lots of folks in the PNW with mogs, but the problem is their mostly too big to wheel much in the tree-bound trails. and damaging the trees isn't looked nicely upon by anyone - gets trails closed quicker than anything. don't blaim the greenies - it's the BLM that sees damaged assets :shaking: :shaking: most fawked political thing evar ... clear-cutting forest land to pay for schools.

I just hope our man mitch keeps 'em busy sweatin' his toll road bill...
They(lefty safety nazis) can't even get a law passed that you gotta wear a seatbelt if you got truck plates:grinpimp:
You can even still ride in the bed of a pickup:D
Lefties would have a long way to go before banning grillguards here:p
SeaRover 03-25-2006, 11:27 AM i'm really against this bs legislation as well. i'd rather see darwinism take it's course. :shaking: it's just sad when it happens to the kids.
