: Fragged Spider Gears??

I was doing some basic maintenance on my daughter's new Scout II this afternoon. There was some vibration whenever you excellerated and I thought it was "just a rear u-joint". The rear diff cover was leaking so I decided to fix the leak first. When I pulled the cover I was shocked to find that almost every tooth on the spider gears was chipped or broken:mad: The ring and pinion look to be in good shape. What can cause this? I've wasted R&P gears several times but never the spiders.

Everything else looks ok. Can I just replace the spiders with an Ez-Locker?

Any help is appreciated :)

I have no idea why they let go, but I've blown 'em up in a buddie's rig before... And I put in an EZ Locker to replace them. Just make sure you thouroughly clean out the housing. You don't want any stray junks floating around in there!

:usa: I also have had the spider gears self destruct in a couple vehicles. They just get weak and break or someone had it pedal to the metal to many times when one of the rear wheels was stuck.Chances are that all the pieces of metal have gone through the bearings. All these particles will destroy the surfaces of the roller bearings and races. Now is a good time rebuild it and put a locker in!

Saw this happen with a D35.

Spiders grenaded.
So he put in a lockright or somesuch thing.

Went to try out the lockright, and all kinds of racket from the rear end.
Come to find out the carrier was cracked...couldn't tell by looking at it.
Don't know which caused which but...???
Although I doubt its a problem, might want to give it a good once over too.

I know a guy who broke his ring and pinion in his jeep and it turned out when he pulled the cover off the carrier was split in half..He was using a lockright...don't know which happened first, but, certainly carrier splitting woudn;t be good for the r and p.:D

The spiders are the weak point of most diffs. That's one good reason to weld em up! The shock loading from the one wheel peel kills parts.

Thanks for your help!

Being a cheap SOB, why couldn't I just weld up the fragged spiders? Just the edges are missing.

The spiders gears in my heep went out and when they finally went there were quite a few broken and chipped teeth. It took a few years for them to finally give out and how fitting that I finally wasted them on Poisen Spider! :D I thought mine was just a u joint as well at first. I replaced them with a lock rite....if I had only known then what I know now! *knock on wood* so far its still holding up so I guess I can't complain too much!:roxy:

How much of a daily driver will it be? You could weld up the spiders it would just drag the tire when going around the curves.
p.s. let me know when you need some sheet metal for it.

My dad Toasted the spider gears in his front 60 on his F250. I wish I would have gotten some pics of it One of them just had a section of teath broken out, but on the other the teath were stripped all the way around. The ring, pinion and carrier appeared to hav no damage, as he stopped shortly after it let go.
They went out with a loud bang while he was plowing snow. Thought he toasted a ring and pinion.
