I'm thinking of swapping coiles in before next weekend and I need some advise from those who have been there.

I run coils in the front, what do you want to know?

I have had a coiled front end for about 4 years now. It's cool to be diffrent, but other than that I don't see any big advantage over a well set up leaf spring suspension.

I wheeled with you on Jackhammer last fall. My cousin had the exocaged blue toy xcab and I had the green 94 pickup.I am mostly curious what you used for coiles and springrates and what you built your spring buckets out of. With My truck being as big as it is, the springs are hanging really low and hanging me up. I want to move the axle another couple inches forward to improve my approach angle. Then I am going to do the same thing to the rear and move it forward about six inches so I have a wheelbase closer to stock.

I tried Ford Ranger 4" springs at first. They had to much spring rate. I then swicthed to 4" TJ springs, since I am comparible in wieght. They worked out really good. My front axle is moved 3" forward. My spring buckets are just plate steel, with 3" tube for the center suport. Its not pretty, but works.

I went all yota with a complete FJ80 frontend/suspension, everything is already worked out, geomitry, linkage, etc etc. When installed so everything clears and works properly with the 86 mini frame, the stock FZJ80 springs give about 4" of lift. They also allow a 10" shock w/o falling from bewteen the mounts.

I'm planning on using Wild Horse bronco coils on mine. I lke the simplicity of radius arms and will be using Bent and Twisted coil pivots and radius arm extensions. I found some bolt on buckets on an F100 at the junkyard. I may try to get the tj coils to work in them. Since knog's is saying that the springrate is good. I have a V6, not sure how much more than a 22r it weighs, but tj's come with a straight 6 which is heavier, I'm sure.
I'm switching to coils to:
-Get rid of my drop spring hanger
-move the axle a little more forward
-avoid axle wrap
-to be different as if full width SAS'd isn't enough

Kong's do you ahve any mroe pics of your setup. I'm interested in seeing some more on the tj coils.

What size tyres are you running with the 4" TJ springs?

Thanks...

If you don't mind Kong's, I'd like some more info and pics of your setup. I want to have mine done by the end of June, so I'm still researching possibilities. I'm now thinking about going with a wishbone 3 link instead of a panhard. How do these do on the road in a front end? I've seen them on rear ends, but not fronts. For any other guys thinking about doing this. I'm going to pin down spring rate #'s for the tj coils, bronco coils and FJ80 coils, since the FJ 80's are about as close of a reference to stock as we'll find, I think.

I got the spring rates for 5.5 coil springs from and it was 205 front and rear. I'll post what catalog I got them out of later.

my best advice is that it probally is not a "i need it by next weekend" kinda project unless you have access to a shop full of equipment and the know how to use them.

that said i run a 4 link coil over set up on my rig and it works great. take your time and research your suspension design then plan out you project accordingly

Almost all of the old brackets are cut off of the frame and I have all of the new ones cut out except for the panhard ones. I am going to start welding them in tomorrow. I am using Wild Horses 3" coils. I bought 3/4 x 7/8 chromoly heim joints and 1 3/4 by .250 wall dom for the control arms. I am not doubting you camo, but I am a glutton for punishment and I do have what I need for the project. I am signed up for your WB run sat.

Hey, just another option, what about a wishbone 3 link? I think I am gunna try this on the rockwell. Seem to have better lateral control of the axle than a 4 link and you can avoid the sort of odd movement of the front axle when articulating!

Here's a few pics of Kong's truck. Obviously the truck looks nothing like this anymore. Mark, that thing is looking awesome. I haven't even seen Jack's in its final configuration. And yes, the lincoln locker is still holding up great!!!

Kong,

How would you compare your coil set-up's performance to a coil-over front suspension? I know they look cool, but that's a LOT of Jack. Worth the money? No?

Coilovers would work better. More choices for spring rates. Less stuff to find room for. But the cost is defainatly a factor.

Kongs could you send me some info on the parts you used, I am going to be doing a coil front on my 4 runner, I'm thinking of using ZJ coils, what kind of controls arms, trac bar, steering, and coils/coil perches did you use, ...if you don't mind me asking. Thanks alot.

TJ 4" coils. Everything else is custom one off stuff. Trac bar is 1 1/4 2.50 wall DOM, 3/4 inch rod ends (to small). 5 link setup. Going to switch to 3 link set up since the truck is no longer street driven. Links are 1 1/2 2.50 wall DOM. Lots of time spent geting the spring, shock and bump stop to all work together at the same time.

So they work better because of the wider range of spring rates? (tuneability) or is there more to it?

Thanks for the input.:)

That's it, as well as the 14 or 16 inch shock travel

Many times suspension travel can be proportionate to instability.

How does this apply to coils vs. coil-overs?
Are the 16" travel coil-overs more prone to body roll vs. a Kong's coils?

I know spring rates and shock quality are factors, but to what extent?

Yes I knew 'Kong's' was a 4x4 shop. I have been to their website many-a-times(nicely done page by-the-way).

Not really, al ot of guys are stretching their travel to close to this amount by angling the shocks inwards, etc. One thing I noticed about coil overs and the same would be true for coils, I assume, is that on sidehills the uphill side spring tended to want to push the rigs over. Most suspension setups would probably do this though. The stability of a particular setup is going to come from its design. For both coils and coilovers link position, length and placement all affect how the suspension will work. Do tons of research before doing one of these setups.
