View Full Version : Anyone ever shoot an 'exploding target'

DozerDan
03-23-2006, 08:34 PM
Well my buddy showed up tonight with a box of 30 of these 'exploding targets' that his father found in the basement from years ago.

He tells me he took one apart and lit some of the powered on fire on the tip of a knive and it just sparked and flared up.

Okay cool lets shoot one. I grab the pellet gun and we place a target (2"x2" square) in this tree. It has about a 1" round red circle. I back up about 30' and tkae a shot. I hit the very edge of the red circle--- nothing. I reload and shoot it again, missed the inner circle. (sights are way off)

So now I am like F' this, walk up to it and more or less shoot it point blank. FUCKER BLEW UP. Flash BOOOOOOM echoing booooommmmmm.

Everyone in the house runs out to see wtf happened, and the two of us are just staring at the hole in the tree going cooool.

My ear is still ringing, but it was well worth it.

We decided not to set any more off at the house. but this weekend we will be testing their destructive power.

Sounded like a cross between an M80 and a 1/4 stick. and did a good amount of damage.

Anyone (doc) know where I can get more of these, I dont forsee 28 of them lasting us very long.

Just shooting the can would create a moment of good entertainment, even more if you attach the target to it.

Did these look like they were bought somewhere? Something like that wouldn't be too tough to make.

The targets are about the size of a deck of cards cut in half. The first time we found them
was fifteen years ago or so--we were having a hard time hitting the target. We were using high
powered air pistols. We had stuck the target on a fence and kept joking, "Sure would be funny
if it blew up the fence." Wel we got about 10' away and finally hit the damn thing. The target
blew the fence to bits. After we figured out we were both still alive and had a good laugh we
started to get good with the targets. Shaving cream cans, soda bottles, mailboxes, little trees,
heck they suckers did a good job taking the bark off big trees. The suckers are so loud, any women
in the area will immediately want the fun to stop.

Here is a blurb I found about the targets:
Bullz-I Exploding Targets measures 2-inches square and is 5/8ths of an inch thick. It's bright red bull's -eye, 1-inch in diameter, is surrounded by 3 black rings on a white background. An adhesive strip on the back enables you to affix the target on any clean, dry surface. Housed behind the red bull's-eye are the unique ingredients that give the Bullz-I Targets it's mighty explosive power. Detonation is equal to a 12 or 10 Ga. blank."

http://www.tannerite.com/
The targets he has are a type of binary but they're not tannerite. I used to get them at the gun shows in Fort Worth for $10.00 for a box of 10. They are about 2" square and about 1/2" thick with a sticky back. They are a lot of fun. Usually when we hit them with a pellet gun, they just fizzle. But when you hit them with any centerfire, it's a pretty impressive blast. But no comparison to tannerite. If you lined up the whole box of ten, it still wouldn't equal a tannerite charge. I've lifted a washing machine about 10' into the air with 1 tannerite charge and I have it on good authority that two will flip a car if properly placed. If you light tannerite, it just melts. no sparks, fizzles, nothing. Also, it will not detonate with anything but a centerfire rifle round. You can shoot it all day with any handgun round and you'll just make holes in the bottle.
The clay pit where we used to play with it was closed down and we haven't found another spot where we can use it. I've got a whole case of it in the ammo safe that I'm itchin to play with.

Ill have to take a picture of the tree I had it on. There was a little chip in the bark, just big enough to rest the target on, after I shot it, there is a 8x10 chunck of bark missing, and it is into the side of the tree.

If your a good shot with a rest, setting them out at 200 yrds is cool. There is a time lapse between the report and explosion, and the chance of injury is nill.

One time I set a round bail on fire and set a row of starting fluid cans across a log about 5 feet before it. A .223 round going through the can takes enough fluid with it to the fire to act like a fuse. Makes a nice 5' fire ball!

Sounds like it was tannerite. Two powders that you mix in a plastic bottle and then shoot at. No flame, Just smoke and a boom. Ya gotta channel that release of energy. Thats where the fun comes in. And nothing says you can't combine several charges to make a more powerful one.(or even use a sturdier container to put it in besides the plastic bottle, but I don't accept any responsibility for anyone trying something so stupid:D )
Basketcasejeep, just google tannerite and on their website, they tell you all about it.

PLEASE NOTE: we are not responsible for acts of stupidity, and, though common sense should make this unnecessary, we have been requested by U.S.D.O.T. to state that these can NOT be carried (neither in checked nor carry-on luggage) on a commercial airline.

Its good to see some companies still haven't given into the PC bullcrap you usually see in warning labels.

Real large explosions are indescribably cool. I love the way the atmosphere itself seems to resonate around you after a big boom :D

No tannerite will destroy whatever it's next to, or atleast launch it.

We placed a double charge at the base of a 16" tree and shot it with a .223. It completly destroyed the tree from the base to 8' feet up the trunk. It was sorta cool cause the branches were entangled in the nearby trees and it was just hanging there for a bit. Works well for removing old dead trees as well.

A friend of mine bought some a few years ago.
Lots of fun, kids with 22 rifles loved them (it was too easy for the adults to hit).
One caught fire, it caught the box that it was sitting on fire. We were surprised that it burned well enough to burn the box.

Come on PBB I am disapointed. I asked for suggestions for things to blow up and got no feed back.

Done so far

RC car (while moving)
Various bottles, cans of paint, carb cleaner
1 gallon of gas (no more of that)
tree
1/2" plywood - did some decent damage
Stuffed animal (lots of damage but very localized)

So what do you want to see blown up. And no I will not put one on me and let someone shoot it, so dont even ask :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

A few areosol cans that say do not puncture taped together.

We been using tannerite but would like to have something on a smaller scale when a certain town cop is on patrol (we live on 10 acres out in country but the city starts where we hit paved road coming out the drive), we got some many, many years ago and they were called railroad torpedoes, little styrofoam block with a peel and stick strip on the back,, hit one with a pellet gun and car alarms in an eight block radius back in the city would go off,,,, really cool stuff.

An uncle (farmer) of an ex girlfriend of mine used to put a stick of dynamite on the end of a tobacco stick and set it out in the middle of the field across the street from his house (dead quiet country road with no traffic). We'd sit out in his front yard and shoot at it with a .22. Everyone was usually about half lit, and it was a good ways out in the middle of the field, so it'd take several shots to hit the dynamite. About the time you stopped really paying attention to the shooter, they'd inevitably hit the target. plink, plink, plink, plin-BOOM - windows would rattle for miles. Eveybody in the yard would hit the dirt, get up, dust themselves off and start laughing. We'd only be able to do it 3 or 4 times before we had to put everything up.

1 gallon milk jug full of gas sitting on top of a 1/4 stick makes a really cool bang and mushroom cloud fireball, so does a small propane bottle tossed into a hot campfire.

Coolest thing to shoot.................12 gauge shotgun at close range vs. a burning tiki torch (lawn torch). Makes a nice fireball.

Worst thing to shoot.............12 gauge shotgun at close range vs. cowpie on the ground at your feet. Makes a nice splashback of cowshit on your face.

So what actually ignites the gas? I have shot metal targets (3x3 square tubing welded shut on one end) half full of gas and couldnt get it to ignite.
A bullet made of copper and lead, doesnt have anything to create a spark, so how does it ignite the gas? Even shooting a propane tank, How does it ignite?
