HELP!!! last night I after work I drove home about 40 miles at highway speeds. And as I got of the freeway my truck stalled just as I pulled up to the house so I figured I ran out of gas (I was on red for a long time) so this morning I put 3 gallons in,it would run at high rpms but stalls out at idle. I’ve had a small problem with my alternator(as seen in past posts)it is also a rebuild could this be the problem? My carb is less than a year old, battery is new .I have fuel in the sight glassof the carb, and my fuel pump is new (ccot fuel pump) so I need to get to work this week any suggestions would help thanks Ligo

Morning Ligo,
This is on your '84 FJ60 (from your profile)? Correct?
There is an idle cut off solenoid on the carb. It will open up the idle circuit when you power power applied, but close when you turn the ignition off to prevent "run-on". With my finger resting on the solenoid, I'll have a friend turn the key on and off (don't start the engine!) but you should be able to feel the solenoid opening and closing. No power? just start looking at the connections and tracing it back.
Sometimes the "Italian" carb rebuild will help with the idle circuits. Rev the engine, and using a glooved hand, place it over the carb inlet until the engine almost stalls. Let the hand back off again, letting the engine catch it's breath. What is going on is the air jets get a dust/dirt build up over time. By choking the engine until it almost stalls, it will momentarily force fuel to "back flow" up and out the air jets displacing any foriegn material in them. For me this works about 30% of the time... so worth trying. I'd check the idle solenoid first.

Check your EGR valve, as a potential problem. According to the Toyota manual if the EGR valve is faulty, then the engine will idle rough and/or stall. However, the engine can be made to run with a faulty EGR by reving it up.

I'm inclined to believe it could still be an alternator problem, Ligo, the aftermarket ones often have spotty quality control, some people end up with decent ones, but a good friend of mine went through three or four of them (under warranty) till he got one that didn't fail after a couple of hundred miles. Second, as Roundrocktom pointed out, I'd check your idle cut off solenoid, especially if it's still the original one.
Since you point out that you nearly let it run out of gas, you could have sucked in some of the crud from the bottom of the tank into the carburator. Make sure you check your fuel filter, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it just in case. Then try Roundrocktom's suggestion for the "outback carb rebuild".
Have you done the fuel tank recall replacement on your FJ60? Did the PO do it? If it hasn't been done, do it, you can get it replaced with a brand new tank at a Toyota dealership near you, and it's worth it, yours could be pretty rusty inside.
Well no obvious cause to the problem, so I took it to my mechanic he thinks it might be the idle solenoid since the carb is new from Toyota it still under warranty so in goes a new one hopefully that will solve the problem. How do I go about finding out about the gas tank recall ?
