Virginia to New Mexico does not take you through the People's Republic of California. It's a different world out here. The local cops might not take a second look, but a trailer without a plate will get the attention of the California Highway Patrol. You will find yourself being stopped by not one, but many cruisers. If it is at night they might call out a helicopter or two to illuminate your criminal ass with the Night Sun. They will call to you over the PA to throw the keys from your vehicle. Then they will tell you to put your hands out side and open the door from the outside. Once you're out they will have you lie down in the road spread-eagle. That sucks if it's been raining. But that suckage does not compare to when they come up to cuff you and they pick the biggest one in the bunch to put his knee into your lower back with all his weight as he pulls your arms behind you.
Just stay on surface streets on the way to the scale.

Or a Chippie on a bike.

On the way to TDS, I got pulled over on the 210. I was guilty as sin and was looking at a very expensive ticket. I brother pulled in behind me and just as the Chippy was walking up to me he gets on the radio and starts doing the theme song to CHiPs. It was all I could do to not laugh in that Chippy's face when he asked for all my paperwork.

Got lucky and didn't get a ticket, but only because there was an injury accident about 500 feet behind where I was pulled over.

you can go to dmv which you have to do anyways, tell them you need to start the paper work to register a new trailer and get a temp moving permit... it's really not that hard! :flipoff2:

he said not until they get the weight, i asked him twice. Then again he works at the DMV so he most likely doesnt know.

I've registered two non-previously registered trailers here in California, and did not have to get either of them weighed.

In both cases, I went down to the DMV first and explained what I was doing. They gave me the temporary tags which I taped to the fender and went back with the trailer. The second visit I didn't have to wait in line, they let me go straight to the appointment line.

Trailer #1 was a small homebuilt trailer. Holds 2 snowmobiles or 1 big quad. They gave it a VIN sticker, I paid the fees, and that was it.

Trailer #2 was a 18' commercially manufactured flatbed I brought back from my parent's place in Wyoming. When I towed it home the plate was still valid, but by the time I got around to dealing with registering it here it had expired. They verified the VIN on the trailer, I paid the fees, and that was it.

i just ran the gauntlet and went straight to the dmv and got it all done in one swoop. God those people are slow and dumb, it could have gone so much fast.
well now i can say i have a trailer queen.
thanks for all the help

mind if I hijack? The guy I bought my trailer from apparently never sent the pink slip to the DMV. Carson built it originally. I don't think I'd have much of a problem with the guy but I don't have his contact info anymore. Should I see what the DMV can do for me? Try to register it as a new trailer?

Why would the guy have sent the pink to DMV? Why didn't you get it when you picked up the trailer? In the future, don't lay out money and take delivery without getting the paperwork. After they gots their cash, your paperwork problems mean nothing shady sellers.

California doesn't title (pink slip) trailers anymore...

Yes they do....as long as you ask for one. :shaking: I just bought a 19' flatbed 2 weeks ago and the previous owner didn't have enough paperwork. After transferring all the crappy paperwork to my name, I requested a pink slip.

Just say that I now have a brand new pink for a trailer sitting right here in front of me:D

Shouldn't be a problem. I've driven unstickered vehicles to the inspection station many times to get the vehicle inspected. The one time I was stopped I gave the officer my driver's license and explained I was going directly from my house to the inspection station and he was welcome to follow me there to make sure. He had me show that my brake lights and turn signals worked and that my brakes worked, walked around the car to make sure everything looked ok, and then sent me on my way.

Hmmm... Interesting! When I was there they said they don't title them anymore since switching to the permanent trailer stickers. *shrug*

OK, I'm a dealer in CA so here's the skinny.

Yes, PTI plates are only good for 5 years. It costs $20 for 5 years of registration.

Yes, you can get a title for the trailer. It is an extra $16 at this time.

As a dealer I can charge the customer up to a certain amount for doing the paperwork for DMV and the customer. On top of that, I would then charge the customer the $20 reg. fee and the $16 certificate of title fee if they want a pink slip. I don't ask the customers if they want one or not. I just charge them the extra $16 and have them sign the paper. People want pink slips so I make sure they get them. I've been around the world with DMV and they have their heads so far up their a**es they can't see day light unless they open their months.

I figured I would piggyback this thread instead of starting a new one (let me know if I should start a new one)

Ive built a small camping trailer. How do I go about getting it licensed/registered in washington? In this thread I see hints of weighing and inspection, Do I have to do this? Anybody know of a website where I can find out the information /checklist before I go?

Thanks,

Arne Anderson

in california all you need is the reciepts for the items used to build the trailer, you bring the reciepts to dmv, dmv looks at teh reciepts charges you some money and gives you a temp operating permit usually good for a month, within the month you bring the trailer to dmv, they take a quick look at the trailer ask a few questions about the trailer then issue a vin sticker and a licence plate, but since rules differ from state to state you may want to make a trip to dmv with the reciepts and see what hoops they want you to jump thru

I might as well add info for Arizona.

I just called the MVD in Phoenix (yes, that's what we call it here), and the grand total for reg/title of a homemade trailer is about $129.00 in fees, along with completing a visual inspection at the MVD location of your choice.

If you pass inspection they assign you a VIN sticker (or something like that, it was hard to hear the CS rep with all the yelling in the background there.)
