I need a little advice and I'm sure you'll all GIVE IT TO ME ! !! I was just thumbing through my latest edition of 4Wheel Drive Hardware and noticed a new 5" YJ spring under lift kit with all the necessary hardware, the problem is I own a 86 CJ7 and am wondering what other than spring perches would I need to change to accept the YJ springs??? The reasoin I'm looking at a spring under is because of axle wrap and steering issues when springing em over, I plan on doing a shackle reverse and having drivelines built as well at dropping my transfer case and running 35" BFG mudzzzzzzzz.

Flame IT !! ! !

why lift it 5" to turn around and drop the tcase an inch? That is just counter productive.

who makes the kit?

I hope dropping the transfercase will help with driveline vibration, the lift is listed as a 4Wheel Hardware kit so I'm reluctant to purchase it because I'm not sure who builds the lift kits for them.

Thanks, Rick.

You shouldn't need to change your spring perches. I believe that only the front springs are wider than your CJ springs. Rubicon Express makes a conversion shackle to allow you to use the wider Wrangler springs in the front.

If you go with this, let us know how it works. Sounds like it might be an option for me. :smokin:

Thanks for the help ( and not flaming ). Do you guys know of anyone that has installed a kit from 4Wheel Hardware?? I'm concerned about the integrity of the spring rates, I've already bent the Rancho springs currently under my Jeep. Do you think a 5" and 35"s will fit without too much rubbing?

My first kit was from 4wd hardware and within 8 months one of the rear springs had sagged so bad that when ever I turned the tire would go up into the fender and rub like crazy. I switched to RE springs and they have been good for 3 yrs.

I say dont waste your money. I think there is a new 5" kit for the YJ either Fabtech or BDS makes it.

Dude...

Go with the Rubicon Express YJ 4.5" Xtreme Duty (SUA) lift. I've been running it for years and love it!!

Call Rubicon Express and see if they make a similar kit for CJ's - or how you can get parts to match up. You'll also wanna make sure the WIDTH (hanger to hanger) is the same on your CJ to a YJ before going with YJ springs.

I would also advise going to a link suspension and some either airshox or coils. I think any 4" lift spring is either going to be really stiff or have axlewrap problems. Once you have 4" lift, you're going to need bigger meats to fill the fender wells. At some point, between gears and bigger tires, youi're still going to have axle wrap that's pretty severe.

Otherwise, plan on doing an anti-wrap bar at the same time as the 4" lift.

So I don't sound like a quasi-buggy guy who hates leaf springs, My 80 CJ is currently SOA at both ends, but the front is about to get linked. The front axle wraps just from braking!

Thanks guys,

I've been looking for a kit that's 5" or longer that will allow me to spring under but short of having Alcan build springs and then price out the rest of the pieces I saw the 4Wheel Hardware kit and thought it might be a good deal.

I looked again tonight and haven't been able to locate anything.

Thanks, RW.

BDS makes that other 5-6" SUA lift for YJ's.
If you're playing in the rocks, you won't be able to flex anyways with that arched of a spring, so whats the point?

You could get by with a regular 3.5-4" lift, mild body lift, and some fender trimming to run 33-35"s. Just adjust your bumpstops if needed, and you'll be better off in the long run.
