I don't know what's worse...the possibility of owning another one of these infernal machines, or me spending more time here :flipoff2: And I'm sure you thought you were rid of me for good!

So, I really liked our '95. I know the '96 were among the worst made evAr. Should I even shop for a DII, or stcik with a late model D1, or should I just go away :flipoff2:

Anyway, I know this thread is slated for the newbie forum :shaking: but there might be a slight chance this new search may develop into a classic novella...Girl Scouts, anybody? :D

Range Rover switched to Bosch in '99, right? So did the DII start out with Bosch from the get go? If so, I guess you'd have to avoid anything that new? Hahaha

Do not buy a DII unless it comes complete with a Rovacom or similar computer system.

There is little to nothing you can do yourself on a DII, including changing the plug wires.

If you choose to ignore my counsel, I can assist you in the purchase of the ABS modulator you will need, the hubs you will need, the transmission selector switch and wiring harness you will need, and the multiple door locks you will need. Oh yeah, buy head gaskets and bolts in bulk :flipoff2:

Thats sooo right. I have one in the shop right now that needs everything mentioned.

The only thing that hasn't gone wrong with this one is the driveshaft hasn't broken and gone through the side of the transmission yet:shaking:

I love Rovers in general.......right up to '96.

That's distributor...I don't have more than 1 (but I still have your Crane Fireball ignition box...).

I don't think I could sell my home and afford the ice-cream truck...but considering your recent penchant for junk Mercedes, I don't blame you for trying

Thanks, Paul. That was my gut feeling. We were really fortunate with our '95; the only maintenance it ever required was replacing the radiator hoses. I don't want to touch a '96 because that was the first year of the GEMS and the first year BMW had their hand on the Disco (and they righteously f*d up the RR in '95...what an abortion).

Late 90's D1? I could probably score another '95 really cheap, but likely not in the condition my wife wants...I was really hoping on selling our Jaguar and being rid of British autos for good :shaking:

99 D1. Not the D2, but as close as LR ever got to figuring out the Discovery IMHO.

(This from a 96 owner) :flipoff2:

Well, going against PT's better opinion. I love the DII. Much more refined than the D1 and I personally don't believe there is much I can't do on it. Granted the plug wires will take a bit of work, hence still on the "to do" list, but overall our truck has been very reliable. In stockish form it is way more capable than a D1. Or course we added a CDL and proper rear d-shaft.

My vote is DII. Classics are nice too but they definitely seem to have more bugs.

I drove a '97 D1 earlier this morning...97K, lots of work done on it recently: new cats, PS hoses and box, brakes all the way around. Good grief, and she had most of the work performed at the dealership  Drove like the fat pig I remember, normal wear and tear...we'll see what the wife thinks.

As far as the DII goes, it's not so much being in over my head with repairs...I've got no problem swinging a wrench and hammer :D It's the price of the parts, and D1 parts are relatively cheap to come by.

My Daily Driver is a 99 DII, no issues in all that time except the front drive shaft.
(knocking on wood:p ) 106k on the odometer, all electrics except driver heated seat are functional.

Well, I have a 96 (bought it in 2002) w/ 138k on it and it is going strong...nevermind the fact that with the amount of money I have spent on it in repairs I could have bought 2.

My wife drives a 02 DII and I really like it. It has been very reliable thus far, compared to the D1 in the same ownership time frame. I like the body style better, and I like the power better. I am not sure how the performance compares to a 99 D1.

If it is for your wife, I say get the DII.

My 04 had problems deciding it didnt want to start in the morning.

That's the story of my life :D
After we bought our '95 Disco, I sold my '66 Beetle to buy a non-op '83 RR. I found another '66 Beetle last summer and sold the RR in October (the Disco we sold back in '94). In between all of this is a couple of Fiats and a Jag, so don't think I was leaving the marque for anything better. Y'know...that whole "marajuana as a 'gate-way' drug" thing

I'm not so much worried about Rover life again, but we bought the wife the Honda Element last summer and we're really going to eat it by getting rid of it. Private party sale and I might come out a bit ahead of the balance of the loan. Dealer trade-in, and I'll be tacking another $3K on top of the sale's price of the rig :shaking: Fawkin' sharks!

Basically, I've got a few more weeks of work left into my Bug before it's running 12's in the 1/4 mile  , as long as whatever my wife is driving isn't broke, I'm happy.

Besides, all it has is front-wheel drive. Torque-steer, baby...torque-steer :flipoff2:

Whaddya want pics of? The Beetle or the Rubbermaid Storage Container?
