: Tranny out, tranny in, tranny out...

Well I managed to finish the 5-speed swap and some other stuff before Paragon yesterday, yeah. Now it seems that my 'good' 5-speed ain't so good. 5th gear is suddenly noisy as hell and 3rd is not too far behind.:mad: Hmmm.. maybe I'll fix the Auto and put it back in.:D

When I ordered my rebuilt tranny from Marlin back in December, I went from a 5 speed to a 4 speed...

Reson being, my 5th gear and 3rd gear were going out. I chose to go with a 4 speed for a coupla reasons...

1st off...My local badass toy mechanic (20 years in Toy dealer, 10 or so at local 4x4 shop) told me that 5th gear WILL NEVER be dependable in a Toy with big tires, etc... Reason being that Toy 5th gear is not a 5th gear but an Overdrive. He showed me in a TOy tranny how weak 5th gear looked as compared to some other 5th gear trannies.

So, having learned what the components in a Toy tranny looked like, I went home and took apart the 3 trannys I had at the house (yes three plus the core to marlin:D) Anyway, 2 out of three of them had 5th gear and I noticed that BOTH of those 5th gear was narled up...

Moral of the story, 5th gear in Toy trannies is weak with big tires... I know some people will argue and say taht is BS, they ahve been running 5th gear with 68" tires for 300 years, etc... But for my money, Ill go with a 4 gear tranny...(at least for Toys).

TyTy, the trans was fine until my incident last year when my Xtra cab went down a big hill without me. It was really fawked up but I managed to drive it out. Of course I never got past 2nd gear. So whaddaya think, should I open it up or just start looking for another one?

Oh, and 4-speed = high RPM's on the highway.:(

I think I can live with rebuilding a 5-spd tranny every couple years. Since the alternative is doing 3500 RPM @ 70MPH (36s & 5.29s).

85TrailToy...

I hear ya on the high RMP's, but I expect to spend most of my time in the left lane anyway:D

I wouldnt bother opening it up unless you plan on rebuilding it yourself... Not much you can do in there but stare at chewed up gears...

What I would do is call Transmission Exchange, I wanted to kick myself in the head for waiting 4 months @ 500 bucks when I saw their prices! I heard they are speedy too!

You cant beat them prices!

Frank, That sucks, So where are the pic's of you at Paragon. I have the 85 shop manual if you want to use it to tear apart the tranny as long as you don't get it to dirty.

Are you talking about Transmission Exchange in Portland? What did you buy and how much was it? I could rebuild it myself but if it's going to cost a bunch of $$ I'd rather just look for another.

Do you know if all W56's are 23 spline?

Here's the deal, when my 5th started getting noisy and 3rd gear soon followed I figured it was a bearing. I took it to a local transmission ship (Stick Only in San Fernando) and he replaced the bad bearing (input) for 80 bucks. Its back together and runs like a champ. Most likely it is you input shaft bearing and can be fixed for pretty cheap if you have a good tranny shop around.

make sure to ask if they will change one bearing without doing a rebuild.

Im not sure where it is, as far as Im concerned it is on the internet :D I bought a L52 or whatever from Marlin for 500 bucks. Waited 4 months and didnt get my 250 core back (got 100 of it) for whatever reason. I came accross Transmission Exchange on the internet just the other day and they had my tranny for 150 exchange. Sucks to be me!

I will say that I am much more confident in my Marlin rebuild, but Im cheap so if I had known about Trans Exchange I would ahve gone with them.

Plus I heard you get your order from them inside of a week.

Good luck. Might wanna check out that main bearing, could be just that simple...

It's only one bearing that goes bad, marlin can bore the center case and install a larger bearing. I chose to just change all the bearings in my W56, $230 for the complete kit. We will see how long they last:)

Hey Kajo whats up? i see you got rid of your 32s and got some 35s cool.

And Frank you just cant have nice things can you? you do all that work ad it breaks up on you, kinda sounds like your extra cab. as far as rebuilding they arnt that hard and yes you need special tools. Call up marlin and ask the dudes there if they know what special tools you would need or if not just ask for marling himself but dont keep him on the line too long.

Hey trailtoy!

I musta missed you at Paragon yesterday! Were you running with Jesse?

Call Woodward's - just north of Philly. You can find them by doing a search on altavista or something. Unless I am getting the last W56 that they have (picking one up tomorrow), they can help you out.

I got a '94 W56 with (they say) 44k on it for $500. Seems strange that they told me that the engine/tranny that went into Jesse's truck has 43k on it, but that tranny was TIGHT, and the engine doesn't use a drop of oil - so I suppose it could be true!

If you have some gear pullers and access to a hyd bearing press you can easily rebuild these TOY 4 and 5spd trannies yourselves.

I have done several for myself and friends, I use parts from VALLEY GEAR & TRANSMISSION in KENT, WASHINGTON. The last kit I bought was for a 85 carbureted truck it came with ALL gaskets bearings and seals in the trans for 180 bucks. they are all good quality bearings (Koyo and Nachi which are OEM). they also have good customer service... they had my stuff in stock every time. I think they can get fifth gears and reverse gears too.

Call Valley Gear at: (206) 329-5353

Here is the address: 1543 Rainier S Seattle WA 98144-3537

That's about right. The left front axle seal is leaking too...

Sorry I missed you, we missed all the pre-game stuff at Paragon because we didn't get there until 9. I've heard of Woodward's, I'll check them out. ?? about a W56, are they 23-spline?

CWToyota, thanks for the #. If all I need is gear pullers and a press I should be ok. I just don't want to have to buy some $100 one-use item.

hmmmmm, I didnt get shit from them, as I said I got mine from Marlin, I just looked on their page coupla days ago and saw that they had my tranny for 150. Not sure if I read it wrong, probably did, but the "prices" page listed my tranny as 150. Dont know exactly what that means, I just figured that it was a rebuild. Maybe not.
