: Saginaw Steering box dissasembly how to?
1TONTJ 04-08-2002, 05:44 AM I am trying to dissasemble a Saginaw Jeep YJ box to drill/tap/weld fittings to the two caps for ram assist. I can't get the square cap off. I removed the four bolts and the adjusting nut but it doesn't seem to pry or hammer off. How do I do it? Anyone got a write-up? I want to tap the caps so I don't have to do a PITA rebuild.
And no, I don't have time right now to send something to Lakerat (though I may do that later) I leave for Paragon AND Tellico in four days...
Thanks,
Phil

Is it supposed to be that easy? I pryed it up about 1/2" but it won't go farther. Seems like the adjustment stud in the center is stuck on it? Is the square cap threaded to the adjustment stud? i.e. does the cap have to screw off? or do you just pry it?
Thanks,
Phil

You cant screw it off since the design is square, silly.
You have to unscrew the adjustment stud fully off in order to access the ability to remove the cap. good luck and check my other posts.

Sorry, but your pal froadalishus is jerking you around - a newbie cluttering the board with junk.
nasvik 04-08-2002, 06:27 AM 1TONTJ - One of these days, Phil, you're going to take my advice and pick up a factory service manual. What's it been....? 4 years that I've been telling you to get one?
It's actually a simple answer.

no really im a mechanic
1TONTJ 04-08-2002, 06:36 AM Never mind guys I figured it out. The pitman shaft must be rotationally centred between the stops or it will NOT come out(the housing is key-hole shaped).
Thanks,
Phil

WTF are you talking about!?! I've had one since the end of 97.
You've been telling me for years huh? Guess you been wasting years of your time :flipoff2: Hell I actually even SELL the damn things - anyone need a new jeep/chrsler manual for US$95 with FREE shipping ?
My factory service manual is currently at my buddies place (while he swaps a TJ drivetrain into his 89 YJ). It's him that needs more manuals.
Phil
With FSM for both of my current vehicles...

A mechanic eh? I don't doubt it - you're about as useless as most of the "profesional mechanics" around here.
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
What , are you just trying to up your post count or something?

Seeing that he is 19 - I doubt he even has a job.

Disassemble? You don't need no stinkin' mechanic to disassemble a steering box. Do you Phil? Would you like to know how to remove your oil pan plug too? I'll throw in an air filter check for nuthin' extra.

I don't think he breaths without checking the board first......Bahahahahah:flipoff2:
1TONTJ 04-08-2002, 10:50 AM EXCUSE ME! :flipoff2: I tried to take it apart, and it wasn't going. So before I wrecked a perfectly good box, I figured I would ask. Turns out there IS a trick (pitman shaft must be centered before it will come out). I guess you smart guys new that already huh?
Phil
What's wrong with asking - when the info is available?
TJBob 04-08-2002, 11:06 AM DAMN, have you taken your medication today? I'm a newbie trying to fluff up my post count!!! Can you say "It's a joke" :flipoff2: :nuke: :flipoff2:
And yes, I already knew that the pitman shaft had to be centered. I disassembled and reassembled my brand spankin' new $15 junk yard special 1984 J10 box before installing it two weeks ago. :flipoff2:
I passed on the hydro assist for the time being to finish the axle.
