I am in the middle of stretchin the rear WB of my yj 8 inches by movin mounts back. i know that i am going to angle my shocks into the middle, VIA tube crossmember between the frame. but my question is what angle should they go up to the crossmember, for max flex and a little streetability and should i keep the mounts on the axle in the same place? i have already moved the mounts higher on the axle. any pics and ideas will be great, thanks.

Not sure if your full width or not and that will have some implications as to what you can do. I can tell you that on the CJ7 that I helped build last year (fullwidth, re 1.5 SOA springs, D60/14B) we went with 20 degrees pitched in. It's great on the trails but not so much on the street. He's running RS9000's so on the street he dials them up to max but it's still got a pretty good break over tendency when turning and at highway speed lane changing. I'm working on my build right now and definately will be going with less angle although I haven't yet determined what that angle will be.

I had to pitch them in as well, my rims are 4.5" back spaced so running outside the frame was just not working. They look like this / \ Like previously stated, it rides crappy in the rear because of this though. Trail performance is very good, so I guess thats where I want it to be. The set up allows for nice travel also.

i want it to be safe to drive on the road and highway, its my daily driver( i only drive about 10 miles a day at max) but as long as its safe i dont mind a bumpy ride, i just want max flex and performance on the rocks and trails. thanks for the replies, look forward to more

I used to have my shocks running at 45 deg. up to a crossmember that ran between the frame rails. It rode like shit and had alot of body roll. After you stretch the wheelbase you'll have your gas tank to deal with, so shock mounting location get a little more difficult. I built a shock hoop that goes on top of the frame rails and penetrates the body tub. I hole sawed the tub and ran my shocks straight up through to the hoop. I hope that makes sense. It rides 100% better than it did before. My gas tank is raised about 5" through the floor, so I wasn't planning on running a back seat.

That's good info. I was just about to fab my shock mounts like you described. Now I am thinking of your hoop option.

thats a good idea, how far into the tub did the hood and shocks go up?

I think that the hoop comes up about 8 inches into the rear tub. I'll measure and post some pics tonight after I get off work.

I built a box around the stock raised tank and did the roll-on bedliner inside. It has held up fine and I can still fit all my camping gear in the back. The shock hoop gives you another tie-down point which is also nice.

If your exhaust ends at the muffler like mine does, the noise level gets a little abnoxious and if you're running with your top on the fumes can get sucked through the shock holes in the tub. I just run the heater fan while the top is on and its fine.
