Started my Junk on Sat morning (first time in 2 weeks-ran perfect last time) It ran about 4-5 seconds and sounded like I left 7/8 wrench in the fan  Here is the result. I need a 4.0 HO motor ASAP!!!!!!!!!

Yeeowch...

Looks like you left that 7/8 wrench in the block... :(

I've got a rebuildable 258 in my shop, but no 4.0... Sorry.

I am hoping to get it rebuilt within 2 weeks for a huge run we have planned :( See gen 4x4 post for details on that. :( Really need a 4.0, I dont want a V8 and dont have the time or the money to deal with that swap right now. I have spent 10K on this Jeep in the last 2 years, I am sick of bullshit like this. I want it fixed so I can go use the fucking thing :mad2:

don't know how far you wanna travel, but the commercial-ave
pick-n-pull had about 10 cherokees last time I went. (2 weeks ago) and lots of 4.0's in those............

You need a helper, but that's about it. They got those A frame chain hoists that work good for pulling motors. This is a viable solution Kieth. I dont know what they get for a complete motor, but it's definately worth a look see.

I'll talk to Jeff today as well. Man this sucks ass. 3 frigg'n weeks before our maiden run of the year :mad3:

I've got a couple of 258 lower ends that need some help but they're free. They will bolt up to a 4.0 I even have a flywheel. You can use the 4.0 head and you will get a more torque. Due to the long stroke 4.2. What got grenaded on the 4.0?

Keith Strong

basically jsut the piston. Everything else looks perfect :( Cept, of course the cylinder wall. I may call you late ro n those Steve, but for now I wanna try and get something bolt in. Thanks man.

The other thing you can do is make a stroker. Put the 258 crank in a 4.0 block. You can use some sort of off the shelf/stock piston too. The 4.0 has a larger bore while the 4.2 has a much longer stroke.

I dont have the time or the money right now for that :(

Hey Keith,

How much does Kragen or Napa want for a short block? Reuse your head and go for it. They have warranties on those engines.

Not the best quality but if it has a warranty go for it.

Dunno on those two, but I popped into pep boys at lunch (1 block from work) and they want 1700 for complete motor and 1400 for block with internals. :flipoff: to that....I would rather get the TJ motor for 1200.

I know you have said 4.0 over and over, but a buddy of mine has a running 4.2 he is selling CHEAP. He lives in MS, though.
Unless you have a line on some truck freight, you could buy local and be better off. Email me if you want to talk to him. Good luck.

Keith, I have '00 4.0 short block (block crank, pistons, and rods) complete and assembled. This engine was in a '00 TJ that was involved in a fender bender. The impact bent the frame horn down and snapped two of the three engine bosses off the block that the motor mounts bolt to. The TJ had 15K on the odometer when she was wrecked. The insurance company replaced the entire short block and I bought the block from the dealership. It has been sitting in my garage in a engine bag for a year. I was going to put it in my CJ project but I found a tbi 350 instead. There is another set of bosses on the 4.0 just to the rear of the original motor mounts. These bosses are unused and a custom motor mount can be fabricated to utilize the one good boss and the three auxiliary bosses. This block is in excellent shape otherwise. I paid $300 for it and will let it go for same. I am in Austin, TX. Photos available if your interested.

Regards

Why would he put a carbed 258 in place of a FI 4.0?

Because he's broke and needs a bolt-in fast  Both kinda rule out a trip to Michigan though :flipoff2:

Get the PNP Cherokee 4.0!

I just happen to have a sale going on on a '98 4.0 complete with wiring harness and computer to make it simple. $800 you pay freight or pay me trip money to meet. Located in South Dakota.
