: Cage mounted coilover brainstorming
bnine 03-29-2006, 08:39 AM Laying under my rig for an hour last night trying to get visual on some mounting ideas.
Anyone cage mount their coilovers, and have you done it to the stock cage.
The idea I have is to tie the 4 rear corners of the cage into the frame. Run gussetted spreader bars between the pillars over the wheel well. Then run the coil over through the wheel well.
If some of you have pictures of this type of setup that would help a lot. Or if you have much better ideas, or suggestions, Im all ears as this is my first stretch project.
thanks
JESSE_at_TLT 03-29-2006, 02:49 PM It wouldn't be a bad idea to tie into the rollcage, but it would be a lot better/stronger to make a shock tower that extends up from the frame above the rear axle. That way you have support right where you need it, instead of putting loads on the middle of a considerable span between the B and C pillars.
guinea13 03-29-2006, 07:36 PM I have seen a couple of people mount coilovers into the cage. That's all they did was mount there 4 points to the frame and put a spreader bar in between the The rear 2 bars. If I find any pics I will post them up. If built correctly I don't see how it would be any different that putting it on the frame.
pmaddy 03-29-2006, 09:56 PM Here is mine. There are a few more in my buildup thread.
Upper2 03-30-2006, 04:18 AM That is the way I mounted mine. I still need to pull the cage and paint but here are some pic from my camera phone.
bnine 03-30-2006, 08:10 AM Thanks all.
Upper, that bushing and bolt on the rear cage tie in is pretty slick. I was pondering all these different plate and tube setups to do the same thing. I like that idea on yours a lot more then the hairbrain shit I was comming up with.
Got any shots of what you did at the door pillars? If you get some, toss em up.
Thanks again

Thanks againI haven't done the tie in at the door pillars yet. I plan on doing the same setup as the rear with bushings.
Sound_Man 06-19-2006, 04:42 PM what size tube is aroudn those bushings and whered you get the bushings?
Upper2 06-20-2006, 06:20 AM The tube is 1.75 x 1.20 wall DOM and the bushings came from 4 Wheel Parts.

do you know what the part number was on those bushings?
Upper2 06-20-2006, 09:59 AM No but it's the same bushings theu use on their Pro Comp Lift Kit. I think they are made by Energy Suspension.
If I remember right, aren't they energy bushings for yj springs?
Sound_Man 06-20-2006, 11:31 AM if only the bastards would give out a part number over the phone
thelbz 06-20-2006, 12:07 PM I think it would work fine. Almost every prerunner ive seen has the shocks mounted to the bed framing
4x401cj 06-21-2006, 06:55 AM do you know what the part number was on those bushings?
A few months ago I bought some tube/bushing kits from MAD4WD. Had them in a couple different sizes that would take a 9/16" of 5/8" bolt. I don`t see them on their site anymore thought, you should call and ask. I used them for a cage tie-in and trans crossmember mounts and they worked well.
The Snowman 06-21-2006, 08:14 PM My airshocks are mounted to my stock yj cage. The cage is tied into the frame and there are spreaders from the B pillar back and two from side to side. The shock comes right up through the fender well.
I've had it like this for a few years without any problems.
jackrabbit1 06-22-2006, 04:16 PM here you go, tied in.

Pretty sure this is exactly the route Im going to take. Good to know yours has worked out well.
There is some pretty sick fab going on there on some of those cages. Thanks for the pictures and ideas all.
I dont think my junk will be half as skilled as what Im seeing here, but with all these ideas I'll definately be able to shake something out that works.
yep works great
what is that you have wrapped around there?
