: Will I be geared too Low?

I just recently scraped my XJ and I am building a CJ to get it with. The drivetrain is 44 front and 60 rear. I am planning to gear to with 4:88s, I already have a NP435 and I was thinking of doing the teralow in the 300. I will be rocking the new 37 mtrs. With my limited 8th grade math skills. I should be close to 133 to 1. Will I be too low for some throttle attacks. I know the question sounds :rainbow: but I was just wondering because I dont know anyone that is this low. The engine will be the 4.0 out of my XJ. thanks:smokin: :smokin: Robk

I have a problem.

I'm too rich.
Too many women flock to me.
My rig is geared too low.

Tell you what, I hate to see someone in such a predicament. I will give you my 4.10's in exchange for your 4.88's and you will be all set ;) :flipoff2:

I think he must have one of those custom 1 speed NP435's... :flipoff2:

Rob, Do you know Marlin, from Marlin Crawler? Ask him about being low !, and by the way like in other issues, slower is better....

Maybe I can help you out. If you are looking for this to be a highway driver from time to time and you are not worried about your low range but how fast you will be able to run on the highway then the question makes a little more sense. Other than that there really is no way to be too low in granny gear. As mentioned earlier if you need more wheel speed SHIFT.

The question that allways comes to my mind is whether my dick is too big. I guess some guys just have to worry about going to slow. :flipoff2:

If it is to slow then just get bigger tires.

robk,
It's a relative thing, "too low". I'm running 130:1 and don't think it's too low. It's a bit tall if anything. It's 65:1 in 2nd gear if you don't like low. If you're a control freak coming up or down big rocks, you will like it. If you like to use a lot of throttle, it may be too low for you, because you'll break something. I've done this a long time and have had various low/low's. 48:1/62:1/94:1/110:1/130:1. If you have to touch the clutch in the real bad rocks, your gears are not low enough.
With a F.I. 6 cyl, NP435, teralow D300, 4.88's, 36's, it's about right on for hardcore, non-competition, rock crawling. Since I trailer the thing now, I'm not too interested in highway adequacy, which it isn't. I can go about 65 on the road @ around 3000rpm. It's a long way to Moab that way.
The group I run with, 'the beater boys', all have lower (higher numerical) gears than I do, but my engine runs very well at low rpms at any angle, so I can stay up, (or is that stay down?). Frank has 136:1 in his Jeep (6.32x4x5.38). Mark has 274:1 in his CJ8 (6.4x2.62x4x4.10), and Cal has a GM305/TH700R4/Marlin crawlerz set up that nets him 335:1 with everything in low/low/low, not counting the torque converter 2:1 slip factor.
You will find naysayers about 130:1 (or very low gears in general) in every crowd. Just know that none of them that naysay have ever had 130:1, but are just parroting what they've heard from someone else, and think 32:1 and a smokin' clutch is just fine. 8<) I've been there, and it's not a pretty thing.
If i could pick the 'right' area of gear reduction with a moderate H.P./TQ engine and 36-39" tires(and big axles to go with them), I would pick the 140-148:1 creep range. This would make your 2nd gear (w/NP435) 70-74:1, which is a nice range for 'Moab bumping'.
The trend the last couple years is to not have as low a gears as me and my buddies have, but to go with an auto and have a 30-40:1 final drive in low low, which works very well because of the slip of the torque converter. You just have ride the brake from dawn to dusk, and beat up on every obstacle. Those brake lights get hot and stay hot all day.
Too low? I don't think so. It's funny that you're contemplating the same set up as I now have. It's a good one.
regards, as always, jefe

How the fawk does he stop? Put it in neutral?

Stop? He has a low rpm stall converter and just lets up on the gas. I've seen him grind away at a rock face, get out, pull his winch cable up and attach with the wheels slowly grinding away. He returned and pulled with the winch. It's a funny scene. I hate wheeling behind him.

A low rpm stall converter will decrease the amount of slippage and make it harder to stop. If his wheels can still turn against a rock face at idle, his brakes have their work cut out for them.

I had one that would pop out of gear and then be stuck in granny until you pulled the column and used a big screwdriver to pry every thing back into place.:flipoff2:

Is there such a thing as geared too low sounds to me by your throttle attack way of hittitg steel against rock I'll be towing your ass all the way back to camp must rocks I hit I idle right over the sucker and constantly wish for lower gearing (think about it)

I'm running 5:38's with an atlas and a NV4500 on 37 MTR's. I like it, it's low enough on the rocks and let's you run most of the time in 2nd but can back down to 1st when you need it. 5th on the highway is sweet cranking at about 2.5K. You can't go too low.
