Lookin at a 95 PSD 4x4 crew cab manual tranny with 180k miles for a friend. Can anyone help enlighten me into what common problems or whatever we might look for it that vintage truck? Thanks.

Black oil filter, usually means injectors need new o rings. If it is a F250 the TTB wears out and needs new bushings.

A 95 CC will be an F350, so no need to worry about the TTB. Basically the truck is mechanically simple and reliable. Assuming it is a manual shift T-case, everything on the truck is pretty reliable and tough. If it doesnt have a single mass flywheel, its gonna need one if your friend buys it. Listen for any loud clunks from the flywheel area on shutdown. If it has any loud clunks, chances are its a DMF, on its way out to lunch. If the motor starts quickly, and smoothly, and doesnt smoke (other than black) then it should be ok. Plenty of 200k+ PSDs out there running just fine.

Make sure the coolant additive has been maintained.

If not, the coolant will, over time drill tiny holes in the cylinder walls, there are test strips avail to check it, if it doesnt have the additive, keep looking.

coolant additive??? Is that a special ford thing or am I missing something?

Thats for the old 7.3 IDI pre powerstroke.

well he ended up buying it, there were only 2 crew cab powerstrokes in the whole area so got the 95 for $9250. It starts up great and runs good. Already has the single mass flywheel/clutch and has the shakle reversal on the front end too. Only prob he found is the tranny grinds downshifting into 2nd. I have a ZF 5 speed with a BG 1356 out of a 6.9 diesel ford will that fit in there? Thanks for all the help guys.

Before you go swappin trannies, try puttin a synthetic lube in there, I believe the ZF5 calls for ATF, but Im not 100% sure on that. I know thats what the ZF6 takes. If it does call for ATF, get Mobil 1 Syn. ATF, its available at Autozone.

ok, will try that.

ZF runs with ATF.

The powerstrokes still require DCA however cavitation is not as big of a problem as with the old IDI engines due to the lower compression ratio.

OK, I'll ask:
I know PSD and ATF, but where can we n00bs find an (accurate) glossary for terms like DCA, IDI, TTB, DMF?

Not sure where you can find them, but DMF= Dual Mass Flywheel, TTB= Twin Traction Beam, IDI= Indirect Injection, and DCA= Diesel Coolant Additive(sometimes referred to by other names, like SCA=Supplemental coolant additive, and also by other variations). The more you see them, the more you pick up on them.
