i was looking around for some new gears for my 84 pup, as i think i might be going up to 31s, anyone have a recomendation for gearing or should it just stay the same?

My Amigo came stock with 31s and 4.55 gearing. If you are 4wd and your front is an Isuzu 8 bolt, I am not sure what gearing options you have. Your rear is most likely an Isuzu 10 bolt and 4.55 3rd members should be available.

Might help if you indicated what gear ratio you have now. I would say you can run 31s on pretty much any gearset. I ran 33s on 4.30s for a while on the street and keeping the same gears for 35s for the time being. - my friend has 34s on 4.10s and they were satisfactory. (He's changing them now though after a few years)

An 84 would have a 1.9L motor in it, not a lot of power to turn over 31s even compared to 2.6L. It will turn them for sure. I've got a LUV with the even smaller Isuzu 1.8L on 31s and it works with 4.10 gears, but it would work better with 4.56s.

With the 8 bolt front end I think you will be limited to 4.56 or 4.10, that is about all that was available for it that I've ever heard of. The 10 bolt rear end has more options.
