I took a trip to the local pick-n-pull this past weekend, and I came across an enormous pile of axles. I tryed looking for numbers and whatnot on them, but the only markings I could come up with were the brands on the hubs and such. Is there a thread somewhere with pics of certain axles and thier ID's? I think I found a D60 in the pile, but I have no way of really telling. Also, I was having a hard time figuring out what some of the rear axles were. I found the yota's damn easy, but the others were tough. I found one that said SPICER on the housing. Did spicer make axles? Thanks.

Billavista's 60 bible in the tech section will have just about anything you need to know if you have eyes set on a 60. I did a quick google for simple differential cover ID http://www.coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml alot of the axles in that pile are likely to be of the weaker variety, but that link should give you a better idea of what you should/could be looking at.

If your looking for a ford nine inch, the eight inch looks almost identical except you can get a 1/2 inch socket on the bottom bolt of the stump on the 8 inch.

Dana axles will have the model # cast into the housing, next to the diff cover.

Not to mention those kingpins are a dead give-away.

my Dodge D60's tubes are 3 and some change. I think they're ALL that way.

check for kingpin caps.

The november 2005 issue of 4 Wheel Drive and Sport Utility Magazine has a wright up on identifying axles, has pictures and specs, its better than the link provided above, i tried finding the article on their website but it must be too old. the issue is 6 bucks from the primedia back issue website or you could probably contact them and get them to email you the article, that is if you dont save all your mags. hope this helps.

And half of the pictures and specs are wrong. Their bolt count on a Dana 60 is incorrect. A picture of a GM 12 bolt has the Dana 60 caption underneath it, etc and so on. I wouldn't rely on that article if my life depended on it.

look for the kingpins, 9/16 cover bolts, the leaf pad will be made into the differential, most have studs on the 2 inner bolts on the diff, and the diff. webbing will have 60f. a lot of people confuse the big hub 44 for a 60, so be sure what your looking at.

Lug count is a help for a total novice as well...

5 lugs will be a D30, D35 (5x5 or 5x4.5 IIRC),
D44s came in 5 lug, 6 lug (Chevy, Jeep), & 8 lug (ford & chevy HD)
9" only came in 5 lug (look like Toyotas too which are 6 lug)
D60s came mainly in 8 lug

IH & think some Jeeps had a rear D60 5 lug, but they were low spline count (D61s?).

There are also some 6 lug D60s, but the lug pattern is huge.

10bolts are 6 lug
14bolts are 8 lug

~80% correct.

Want to enlighten me on the 20% wrong?:flipoff2:

I just remember that some 90s Chebbys had SF 6 lug 14 bolt.... can't remember the spline count.
