ok, I dunno how many of you are familar with the springer's shackle setup (I fergot the website, I will look it up if anyone wants to see it)... but anyway, from what i have seen the rear shackle mount limit the down travel on the shackle, and thus, the shackle hits it. Does anyone know how to properally modify it easily, or could I Use some sort of chevy or ford mount? Are any of those mounts the same distance from the frame as the dodge mounts? the holes dont matter as I am going to move the mounts about 8" forward anyway.

thanks for the help
Garrett

Springer Shackle Website (http://www.users.qwest.net/~ruthspear/index.html)

Hope that clears it up alittle. I was planning on running the springs under the frame, but I decided to give this a try first, since I have heard about how it can become unstable, and plus this is an easy way to get a shackle flip in, plus gain travel. I know what you are gonna say pat.. just get it running, I know, but it is comming in when i finish up with my garage (shop?) to put on the skyjacker rear springs, and some other suff, so I figure why not. Basically, as I see it now, the pivit will hit the factory shackle mount at the bottom. SO what i am asking is, will a chevy mount (a mount that doesent hit the pivit) work.. aka: is the spring the same distance from the frame on a dodge as a chevy.
Is that clearer?

i don't like anything that lets the shackle pull away from the frame. with big rubber and a V-8 (especially in a heavy fullsize) axle wrap is a problem. i found with my buggy springs it added axlewrap, found the same with double shackles and this looks like the same thing. if your a throttle happy kinda guy, i'd shy away from the idea. i used longer springs with a laid back shackle angle and this works great. look for some late model 1/2 ton springs and re-do the hangers with a shackle flip. just my .02:D

Ok, so what your asking is if this will work on your PW if you switch to chevy mounts?

Yes it should (assuming that the measurements are the same) but you could also just clearance and reinforce the dodge mounts and do the same, without having to swap the mounts.

You could also just forget about Ramp Queen Articulation Enhancers, and swap some regular springs in there, and be done. RQAEs will make it flex, but usually have bad handling side effects. Inboarding the springs can make it a little less stable, but so does ANY nonlocking dropaway shackle design.

Look at it this way.

You can flip the shackles and run a flatter (softer) spring, This will make it flex more, because you reduce the spring rate.

You can inboard the springs. This will make it flex more, because you increase the leverage the axle exerts on the spring.

The end result is the same. Stability on the road, can be controlled with a disconnectable swaybar, or adjustable shocks.

If you look at the shackle thing from a straight flex view, The tension type shackle (your stock setup) will allow for more flex, when set up correctly. The problem is that it usually isn't cheap to set it up correctly!:(
