Can someone tell me if the older style wiper motors are the same as the newer ones.
I have a 91 YJ and the stock wiper motor finally gave up the goast. I was wondering if I can replace the stock wiper motor with one that is from a CJ +/- 1980.
The reason I ask is because I can get one from a 1980 CJ, along with the switch, for less money than buying a new one for a 91. But if the likage isn't going to work I don' think I want to go down that road.

Thanks for any help

Before you go to too much time and money on a new wiper motor make sure that your problem is not in the wiper control relay module. I'm not sure that 91's had them, but that was the problem I had with my 95 YJ. Replaced the motor and the problem didn't go away. Replaced the control module and wa la. The module is cheaper and much easier to replace.

As far as the intercahangability, I seriously doubt that they are compatible, but I'm no expert on that. The reason for my thinking is because of the clearance issues. There really isn't a lot of extra space in that compartment. So unless the motor size is exactly the same, it won't fit. Also consider the fact of the electronic control unit mentioned above. I don't think that CJs had that.

SloMo, you bring up a couple of exellent points that I didn't even think to address when I posted my question.
The first being the controls. You are correct, the stock 91 YJ did have a pretty complex switch/relay box that communicated with the steering columb.

In my application I have eliminated that. The origional wiring in my jeep has been removed. I did a motor swap with a Carb, and I run a universal Painless harness.

My intent was to provide "fused, switchable" power to the wiper motor at high speed only. So when the switch is "ON" the wipers would run. Switch off, wipers off. No fancy control.

The other exellent point that you made was fitting the motor in there. I should have mentioned that I have converted my YJ to a flat dash. So the wiper motor is exposed, just like it is on a CJ.

My intent is to grab the motor from an 80 CJ, and also grab the two position switch. That way I will be able to supply (Fused, power) to the CJ switch and also have the option of High, and low speeds. So if the CJ wiper motor will mate up to my existing wiper motor links... It should work out well.

Thanks for your help,
