In this picture, what is the 12V (black) wire for (e.g., where does it go)? I am only concerned with the trailer end of things.

Sorry for the remedial question, and I can delete it if the flames get too hot.

That's a constant 12v source. Use it to connect to anything on the trailer that needs 12v, like recharging a battery.

what about the aux, wire (orange). is that for things like added marker lights?

No, the center pin of a 7RV plug is used for reverse lights, but can be used for anything because I don't know anyone that has reverse lights beside a few horse trailers and maybe some larger RV's.

I'll be using the center pin for my reverse lights on my trailer. You're still right about reverse lights on trailers, though, since I added mine.

I've been wanting to add some driving lights to my trailer for backup lights. I plan on using the aux. wire to trigger a relay and feed the relay off the 12V wire. I don't think my truck's backup light circuit can handle the two stock bulbs plus two 55W driving lights.

hot damn, my land yatch has backup lights. but why, oh why is the center pin connection so big if its just for reverse lights? i never really thought of rev lights on a trailer, i just assumed it was for something with a larger amperage draw like a bunch of those marker lights you sometimes see on enclosed trailers or something like that.

thanks

You are asking the same question that we have all been asking for years. To be honest, I love the 7rv plug. It is easy to use and it works good. But I would love nothing more than to kick the guys ass that labeled the colors and put the rev. lights in the center instead of ground or 12volts.

just remember the 7way used to be a truck trailer conncetor for over the road trailers and needed to be heavy duty for that application. in the last 20 years it has became standard on rv applications and has for the most part replace the 6 way round that used to be so common

The 7 way plug that truckers use is a round pin style plug. The 7rv plug is a flat pin style. The 7rv was developed by the rv industry years ago.
