I have a dana 30 from a 1991 YJ, is there a u-joint upgrade that is worth while, im pretty sure i have a weak u-joint's in the axle, I herd of 297x joints... but is it worth the work ???

You just need to get shafts from a later model jeep... If you call 4WDHW they sell the shafts to fit your jeep with the 297x which is now a 760x joint...

Just head to a pick and pull or try to buy one piece shafts from an XJ with the 297 joint. You should be able to get them cheaply and you will kill two birds with one stone, stronger joints and getting rid of the vacuum disconnect.

Don't forget to order the seal for the inner passenger side tube for the XJ axles. You have to pull the carrier and put the seal in from the pumpkin. I think Randys and Rustys have them.

So if i was just to buy 297x joints from Napa, i couldn't install them on my late model axle because the shaft size (u-joint input) is different ???

you need to make a blockoff plate for the vaccum motor assembly also

^^ correct, the caps are different sizes.

the tj shafts would also work, not only cherokee ones

XJs and TJs equipped with abs have larger joints .....

i thought the 30 and the 44 vacuum disconnect could run the same u joints.. AKA the bigger stronger u joints found in xj's in yj axles? I just put new u joints in my yj axles today with some friends and they seem just fine.

YJ's from 94 and 95 have the larger (297 aka 760) U-joints. I'm not sure about Cherokees though. If you stick with vacuum disco, you would leave the intermediate shaft (between the diff and the disco) in place, and replace only the out part of that setup (between the disco and the U-joint).

There is no reason to keep the disco shafts. You do no need a block off plate either. When you install the one piece shaft the shift fork clears the shaft and will operate just like normal only it will not be sliding the locking collar. This method will also still let your 4wd light work.

All XJ's with ABS have the larger Joint, and I believe that all 95+ XJ's use the larger joint. All TJ's use the larger joint. HTH.

Some earlier YJs with ABS had 297x ujoints as well - my '93 did.
