I have a 302 sitting in the shop I got awhile back for nothing.
I want to identify the year and what its from - where are the casting number supposed to be ?
I only have the block with heads attached - they are painted grey and look like original paint
the valve covers are cast aluminum and arent painted.

Try the Ford Forum, I used to have a few 302's but I am not confident I remember how to ID them. Sorry

Look above where the starter mounts. The casting number will be facing the ground.
The first two digits should be a letter and a number.
Letter = decade
C=60's
D=70's
E=80's
Number = year of that decade
D7= 1977

I think Ford starting using gray paint in the early 80s. Mustang 5.0s used the aluminum valve covers. Doesn't sound like it has the intake on it. Does it have the spider in the valley for the roller lifters? What casting #is on the heads?

The lifter valley has a sheet metal deal spread across with arms that extend up to each pushrod.
I take it this is the "spider" you mention Grandpa Jeep ?
I will be checkin out the numbers tonite.
This is just a motor I got and am trying to sell as its taking up space I "dont" have.

Yeah, that's the spyder, it should hold down a double ended fork thing on top of each pair of lifters. Sounds like a Mustang 5.0 HO to me. I don't think they put roller cams in Crown Vics or trucks. Not sure how to tell the exact year though. '85-'92 has forged pistons, '93-'95 have hypereutectic pistons. '85s were carbed, '86s were EFI but had funky heads. '87+ were EFI and have the good heads with an E7__ casting number on them.

FYI late model trucks (late 80's, and '90-ish) do use roller motors. I Don't know if the pistons are the same, but I have seen roller motors in the trucks

I wasn't sure on that, but I know trucks didn't have the cast aluminum valve covers. Sure they could have been swapped, but it still sounds like a Mustang engine to me.

and to add to that, the next character is a letter which designates what vehicle it came from. (D7TE) Most repair manuals have the break down in the front of them.
get us part numbers and we can look them up.

Dont think so boss! The first year of the roller motor was '85, or '86, and usually only in H.O. mustangs. The blocks were cast to accept the hardware, but wern't equipped with the roller lifters

That's what I thought. Roller motor first appeared in '85 and was only offered in HO Mustangs.
