anyone done a 4x4 coversion on a later model dodge?

any resources to find a wrecked unit to use as a parts vehicle, or should i just do a custom axle and 4-link?

what kind of case would hold up for towing, and can the stock auto trans be modified to accept a married case? i probably would have room for a divorced setup to make it easy if need be (quad cab long bed)

thanks

You could replace the 2wd extension housing on the back of the trans with a 4wd unit and bolt on an HD 241. But that might be too easy. :flipoff2:

it might not be that simple, ive never messed with a dodge tranny but most of the time you have to disassemble the tranny to swap out the output shafts.

Well, since the Dodge trans used in the later model CTD's is a variant of the A618 overdrive trans, the output shaft is contained in the extension housing/OD unit. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the intermediate shaft on both the 2wd and 4wd versions is the same... it's the output shaft and extension housing/OD unit that's different. I know for a fact that you don't have to disassemble the trans to switch OD units.

If they're not the same, then the just swap the 2wd trans for a 4wd trans. That's simple enough.

Try a search under Auto for manual swaps to get an idea of all the parts needed.....drivelines, consoles, computers, steering, then tack on all the fabracation needed, and a heavy parts list containg such big ticket items such as Tranny, T case, front diffs, steering....ect

good luck

drivelines - easy
steering - should be easy, I would expect all the bolt holes on the frame to be there.
computer - non issue if he swaps a 4x4 stock auto in.
Skid plate/cross member - probably the same, if not, should be bolt on.

Best bet would be to find an entire wrecked truck that's 4x4 and get everything you would need off it.

What are you going to do with this truck? Do you want it stock 4wd height? Or lifted to the moon? Are you going to wheel it? If you want it to be a stock 4wd dodge, probably better off selling/trading for a 4wd. Insurance companies rarely write off a late model 4wd, it pretty much takes a head on like bigdans to total them, and usually the diff is wasted, and often the front shaft punches the tcase so hard it cracks it. Why not put a real D60 in the front with a divorced 205, leafs for cheap or you could link it with coils or coilovers. Great parts/cheap/easy. Good luck.
