any thoughts as to how can i get my brother's turd to return to center? its a 78-cj7 with stock 86 axles and the 86 manual box on it.
i'm not much of a jeep guy, and i'm kinda scratching my head over it a little.
it might be a dumb question, so flame on if it is, at least i posted it in the newbie jeep section. i assume its got allignment needs.
Check the caster. I think the stock settings are somewhere between 5* and 7* of caster.
It could be alignment or it could be worn components. Look at all tie-rod ends, balljoints, and even axleshaft ujoints. All can contribute to the problem.
Is it lifted at all and particularly with lift shackles?

its lifted with a springover and shackle reversal. the tie rods and draglink are new, balljoints seem ok. box is tight with no steering slop.
5 to 7 degrees of castor, i will check. thanks.
let me ask my question another way,
what causes a vehicle to return to center?

Caster is one factor that turns the jeep back to center.
The usual problem with a poorly done shackle reversal is too much caster.

another thing is, if the box is too tight it wont return to center. i believe that even the manual boxes have an allen wrench to adjust slop in the box. try loosening it up a little.
