: What are my options for a high-pressure fuel pump?

The in-tank high-pressure (55 psi) fuel pump just bit the dust for the second time (this time it may have been the actual holder, but in either case the point is the rig stopped running) and I need to find a more reliable and more easily accessible solution.

Anyone on the list running an aftermarket inline external high pressure fuel pump? If so, what brand, how do you like it and where is a good place to get one?

Any info much appreciated all!!!

I am running the one that came with my edelbrock pro flo fuel injection system and it has worked great for nearly 4 years ..But, it is pretty expensive..I know a lot of guys using an external fuel pump for an 86 ford truck on motors converted for fuel injection..seems to work pretty good..about 75 bucks at auto zone.hope this helps.:D

I'm running the bbk in-line pump designed for High HP 5.0's. Cost about 250.00 bones but has ran without any problems for 3 years now. However, I bought a 10.00 pump at u-pull-it off a feul injected honda as a back-up. If you carry a spare, chances are you won't need it!:flipoff2:

Airtex makes a few different universal inline efi fuel pumps, there are two different ones that I have seen: p/n E8094 which is a low pressure pump that works well for GM TBI, they also make another one, I dont recall the p/n off-hand, E8095 or E8096? but it is a high performance/high pressure pump that works for most MPI systems, it is the one that Vortech sells for their blower kits, and they also sell through summit. Just go to the parts store and look through the Airtex catalogue. Carquest sells these pumps as the house brand but they are made by Airtex. They usually go from $115 to $145.

for my 4.4L, I-6, Mopar MPI, H.O. set this is what I found out. With an adjustable fuel regulator at the fuel rail, it runs about 40 lbs at idle, and upwards to 45 at WOT. I had some failures of the pump early on but read on....

After cleaning out the system I bought a new Airtex E-8248 fuel pump-$140, (110-120 psi. at stall,
60-70gph). On Bennie's (Hesco) advice, I put a new prefilter before the
pump. He recommended the Napa #18-7831 filter (it's for a V-6 GM motorboat
engine). This has a crossover to: Napa part #3003 ($3.26ea.) I bought
(3)..It's a clear plastic filter with NO flow resistance. [Being a trombone
player, I had to 'blow' on each contender to make sure they had no
backpressure. 8<)] You can see the gas flowing through it and detect dirt,
if any. A further crossover is the Fram #G3. I previously tried just a "Bb"
metal standard carbeurator filter and it didn't work. Too much resistance.
Bennie also recommends the AC EP-286 (95 psi at stall) Pump but it was the
same price as the Airtex which has a higher psi rating. He said in a pinch
the Carter pump made for the 90-91 Ford P.U. would do.
My second pump to go out was my spare, an Airtex E-2000, a pump not
made to stand the rigors of MPI. It failed sooner than later. The third
pump, and surely the cheapest at $74, was the Blackstone EP7109, kind of a
no-name, generic looking thing from Cragens Auto Supply. It now works fine.
With its lifetime warranty, I'll just leave it on till it goes, replace it
momentarily with the Airtex, and get the replacement Blackstone.(heh, heh).
Bennie recommeded, and I tried to get an in-tank sock or strainer, made by
Airtex, but the way the tube faces none would fit. If I bend the tube a bit
something will fit.
These are some of your options. What kind of engine is this for?
regards, as always, jefe

Try this question at www.thirdgen.org - on their TPI board, in fact, do a search on John Millican or 'external fuel pump'............John did a hella project to get about 12 or so different options for his external pump setup.

I run a Bosch external pump for my TPI motor in my Blazer.........cost about $130 from a local. Let me know if you need the part number, I can find it for ya.

Sorry Jefe, I should have been more clear. I suppose that's a fair question :-)

It's a 1985 Toy, but the motor, tranny, electronics, guages and fuel system are out of a 1997 Suburban 3/4-ton. Vortech 350 hooked to a 4L80e with the original Suburban 42-gallon fuel tank, sending unit and pump. So the fuel system runs at 55 - 60 psi off a pump rated at 90-100 psi max and 35-gph wide-open throttle. Thats a great idea on the pre-filter. This one has a fine mesh screen sock in the tank, which I was planning on retaining. Thoughts on whether I would need a pre-filter along with the sock also still there? All in all that's great(!) info, thanks for the help you guys, this is great! Good link too, BlazzinOR!

Just make sure you have air tight connections between the pump and the fuel level in the tank. If the pump is sucking some air, it can cause hard to track down problems. Also, mount the pump as low as you can keep it protectected from rocks.
