: new rear bumper/tire carrier
budget76 04-11-2006, 06:03 PM well, might as well post up some pics for once. only took me a year to get the time to mount it, and that only happened because i had to drop the gas tank to re-do all the lines and wiring in the rear:laughing:
props to Brad Kellogg on the bumper. i bought it from him off ebay at least a year ago:cool2: only thing i'll be doing is adding a spacer under the bottom of the tire to make it more level, and some kind of bracing so it doesn't wobble as much. and the spare looks so wide because my tires aren't on the truck, i swapped them with my dads when i was trying to figure out my steering and never swapped back.
more info, pics, and BS-ing here: http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51993 ya, sorry, i know some of you don't go on the BB. i'll try to attach the pics for ya:p

go ahead, give me some cookies:flipoff2:
Gen. Nonsense 04-11-2006, 07:23 PM You might want to cover this with some Bondo...:flipoff2:http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=16258
binderbound 04-12-2006, 03:04 AM No cookies, maybe a stale bagel though. Is all that do-do welding from when it broke off from being too thin of material or was it just shitty welding from the get go? Looks nice from a distance and fits the scout well, I just wouldnt show anybody the welds.
*edit* If i were you I would be more conserned with catching the guy that stole half your roll bar. :flipoff2:
REDNECKnBA 04-12-2006, 05:03 AM That looks like clumps of JB Weld to me. Take it back apart and do it right. Turn heat up and move the gun slower.
Brandon 04-12-2006, 10:33 AM neat red X's
MochaMike 04-12-2006, 12:49 PM Here is what I did:
I made a mount on my rear bumper:

I took a D44 Hub & had it turned down.
I then bolted a spindle to the bumper mount:

This is pimp! That's a fantastic way to support the bending moment produced by holding the wheel/tire combo so far from the axis of rotation.
P.S. What's the locking hub used for now? To keep the rain out, I guess? Or is that the bottom of a Coors can?
Brandon 04-12-2006, 03:52 PM .. That's a fantastic way to support the bending moment produced by holding the wheel/tire combo so far from the axis of rotation...
Darn Engineers :flipoff2:
MochaMike 04-12-2006, 04:04 PM Hub is a Trail Spare...
Originally I cut an outer shaft & welded inside a spindle.
The idea was to make it so I can lock the carrier closed/open.
Wasn't able to keep the shaft perfectly centered to weld it though....
Now I'm waiting for another spare shaft.

i didnt weld it, and was going to clean it up, but wanted to see how strong it was first. hell, call up Brad Kellogg and ask him why his welds look so crappy:flipoff2: i had the tire carrier open and shook the truck up and down with the carrier to test those welds, because i had doubts about it too, and they were sturdy.
with the roll bar, i know its ghey, but it's just for show. i dont have the $$ right now to have someone make me a real one that will fit in my half cab, and i had to pull that bar off to repair the rust in the bed. hell, i don't wheel nearly enough to even justify shelling out money for a cage.
neat red X's
still work for me?
and Mike, i really like that design, but i have NO time to change this bumper at all, besides possibly adding one bar to reinforce the tire carrier.
besides the birdshit welds, any other major flaws you'd address, besides the non-SOA scout:p

It only works if you have a BB account - I do at home here so I see them now, I am not logged into BB at work (forgot my password, to lazy to change when I am home I guess)
Brandon 04-12-2006, 06:43 PM looks like you need some weld on that bondo. What is keeping that from lifting off??

ahh, i get it now. i'm getting the red x-s too, because i'm not logged on to the BB. i guess people just have to click the link then.
and yes, i did test the strength of that mount, and will again next time i'm outside just to make sure now that everyone has said this ;)

is there something keeping it from lifting off though? And clicking on the link does no good if you do not have a BB account..
I once nearly got killed by a run away tire carrier in moab - it bounced off cause the guy didn't have anything to stop it from lifting up..

IIRC, it's not just solid strength that you need to worry about with tire carriers.
I've heard stories of carriers falling off on the freeway which were not used much...
It's the vibration/weight sheer factor. (sheers the trailer type spindle off).

sorry about the whole BB account thing. i didnt know that they had the you have to be signed up to view a thread crap too.
for the lifting off, the way it keeps closed makes it impossible to lift up. there is a tab mounted to the carrier, then a nut is welded into the bumper and a bolt with a ''handle'' welded onto it threads in, so it can't move up and down. i DO plan on drilling through and putting a pin/lock on it, but right now all my drill bits are dull:rolleyes:
anyway, there is not just the square there, there are ''fins'' for lack of a better term to add support that are welded on well and spread out the pressure. i think because you guys said all this, i'm going to have to go in there and weld it some more, just to be safe. i'm going to figure out some way so that if it does break off, it won't fall off and kill someone, but haven't thought about it enough yet to have any good ideas. i don't plan on having it fall off, but anything can happen.
thanks for all the input guys, i appreciate it. i really don't want to be driving around if it's dangerous, so since i have off from school this weekd i'll probably have time to address this stuff.
reuben 04-13-2006, 08:40 PM cut it of and start all over, you are gonna have to grind out 99.9% of all the bird shit to get a good weld in there.
scout254 04-14-2006, 12:06 AM I remember trying to get a pic of that through the sierra trek......:grinpimp:
