: formula Toy "Rolling Chasis" up for sale

desertoy

Dalton Fabrication has decided to build a "roller" to sell. It will include a 1985 frame, stripped of all of the body mounts. DOM chasis, basic fire wall, pedal mounts, basic floor board, seat mounts, steering box mount, heavy duty front spring mounts, and a couple of cool body mounts.

Basically, all of the "fabrication" will be done, ready to install all of your toyota running gear. The price will depend on how complete you want it. I will take some pictures as we go. We are starting on it today.

I’m assuming that it will have a title and be able to be registered green sticker in CA?

Would you consider offering a “trade in” allowance if I could provide a chassis w/ clear title for the next one to be built from, or a discount if I provide my chassis for you to put the F-Toy chassis + stuff onto? I think the F-Toys are awesome but I have no fab skills or tools.:(

Cool. I'll probably end up buying a F-toy chassis and welding it on my pickup chassis after I scrap all the Willys pickup parts. I have been thinking about how much fun it would be to compete in the F-toy class and buying a roller chassis from you guys would definately save some time. After all part of the draw of the F-toy class is to lower the barrier to entry and lower to cost.

Good luck guys.

Please understand that if you want to compete in the "Formula Toy Series" you will need to build one to spec. You can get the specs at www.formulatoy.com. Basically, it has to have all Toyota pickup running gear.
There are alot of people that build Formula Toy's with other than toyota running gear. They just don't compete.

Looking good :)

Why don't more people put their winch in the back?

Maybe it's just because we wheel by ourselves, so when we use a winch we're winching ourselves, not someone else. When you're trying to get yourself out, OUT is usually behind you.

In addition, the winch is better protected in the back and it doesn't block airflow over the radiator. also, it's closer to the secondary battery.

Everyone that I have seen with the motor moved back 8 inches and a flat bottom has rear driveline angle issues unless you run a real short transmission. If you drop the t-case 2 inches it fixes ALOT of problems and you can't tell the difference.

Mine seems to be doing allright. Im still on my first set of u joints:confused:
Im flat, motor 8" back, and long trans. I do have the rear axle pushed back a bit, that probably helps. The only issuse I have, if you can call it an issuse is ds noise on deceleration.
I do agree with you though, droping it down 2" is probably better for the driveline and peace of mind.

Nice build up btw. Im looking foward to seeing the dash, int, firewall, hood etc. I deffinatly would of bought alot of that stuff it was available in kit form.

I was told that noise on deceleration is caused from pinion angle issues.:)

When i was having that issue in my toy bugy, I talked to marlin and he told me I needed a Cv joint. I installed one and the problem went away. I know they limit your driveline angle, but I threw a limit strap on and it helped me in more ways then one. I think that dropping the t-case 2 inches is a sweet way to handle the problem before it starts.

Side question. I curious how tall these guys are to the top of the cage. I know there are a number of variations but with the setup you guys are doing, and a set of 39.5s about how tall would it be, given say a 2-4" spring height range?

Is that question confusing enough. I want to know if it would fit inside my trailer in the downstairs area with about 6'6" of ceiling height. :D

As far as fitting 39.5 tires. I dont see it happening on a comp legal rig.
Without some big spacers/wide axles and limiting the up travel.

Ghetto wheeler (the auto ftoy)has them, he pushed his wheel base out to

cut the back of the chassis, and wheel spacers I believe.
I think camo tried to when the 39.5 irocs first came out.

Maybe crawlers would fit better not being so wide.

I imagine 39.5 is pretty big for an f-toy. The only reason I would look into it is that I really want a 4 seater and the extra tire height would be nice.

What do you think the best size would be, and directly relate to the setup you guys are doing, what would be the largest size that would fit and be useable?

I would say a 38.5x14.5x15 TSL/SX is the biggest I would put on. Optimum is a 37x12.5x17.

desertoy
04-28-2006, 05:11 PM
Care to explain your reasons ?

The problem you have to face is the tire getting into the chasis. to keep that from hapening you need to move the axle foreward on the front spring and back on the rear leaf spring. You can only get the wheel base soo long with leaf springs.
The only other thing you can do is to raise the ride height and limit the up travel. this sucks for competition.

Also, 39.5's kill toyota ring and pinions.

Yes, that is the stock toyota pedal assembly that we bolted on a custom mount.

I hope that clutch pedal mount is just for mock up and will be replaced with one with at least one dimple hole in it:flipoff2:

You know those kind of things really mess with me, sooooo...

What you can't tell from that pics is that the one hole in that plate actually does have a 1/2" hole with a dimple in it. I'll get D-Toy to take some better pics.:D

At Hi Des it'll look alot like it does now. It's gonna take more than a couple weeks for the axles to get fabbed and shipped to us.

Also we have Deaver Springs making a set of F-Toy f/r springs, that'll take longer than a week or two, but it's all cool.

To be honest we just started calling vendors today, so you should see some good progress in the next 6-8 weeks.:)

Axle specs have been determined by Mr. John James himself.

Maybe we can deliver them to the rig at the June WERock?

And there is not doubt, this rig will be amazing, and what a great group of folks to throw down this kind of effort to selflessly support wheeling access! Benders, you guys are a model group, a LOT of organizations could learn a TON from.

Because of the height of the chasis, and the fact that we use factory pedal assembly, it takes and extra u-joint to get around the vacuum booster. The factory tilt steering offers the extra u-joint and It's cool :smokin:

The real reason for the using the tilt wheel is cause this is no normal F-Toy build up, this is the full awnn SR-5 Formula Toy. That also why it has the cool factory looking plastic pad under the driverside floor matt... :flipoff2:

I cant figure out what weekend the run is.

Here its says, "This fun filled weekend will be held on the first weekend in May". And' " We hope to see you in April 2007".

http://www.tinbenders.org/hosted_events.php

and here

http://www.tinbenders.org/raffle.php

It says, "The winner will be announced on March 28, 2007 and the winning ticket holder will take possession of his new Formula Toy at the “Johnson Valley Cleanup” run hosted by the Tin Benders on April 28, 2007. The winner must attend our clean up event to claim the prize."

So is it
April 28, March 28 or in May during the run? Also It seems the winner will know before the run who wins. So if I win I will find out March 28, so I can make plans to attend the clean up run, right?

Desert Jeepin
