I had ordered the new cv's from Paddocks for a substantial discount even including shipping, and finally today tore ito it...but i can only get so far.
I removed the wheel, brake caliper and disc, than i unbolted the stub axle from the hub...but it won't come loose. i tried tapping(read pounding with a mini-sledge w/o daminging of course..tried tapping a screwdriver in the gap where the paper seal is...all to no avail. i recall teh rear being a bitch, but this just won't come out? what am i doing wrong? more pounding ? is this the only way? heat? I don't have oxy acc here, but do have mapp gas in a bernsomatic?? suggestions??
I gotta get it done as it's Elisa's driver, so she will be pissed if it sits at all
Help!

whack it harder, with a rubber mallet. I was in the exact same spot two years ago, thought I would surely break it. It was just the seal...
put some ass into it:bounce2: :bounce2: :bounce2:

AHA!!
got it finally!
so..I removed the cv and axle and knocked the cv/bell/star off the axle by installing my ingeniously designed vice-mount!($G receiver-to adjustable hole-plate for mounting pintle or whatever..) with a cool hd swival multivice...anyway it's off and i placed it nexyt to the new one..they do match whew!
but i realized i bought the swivel seals, and the inner seal that i don't want to use...but didn't buy the paper seal or the fancy cv grease...so off to the dealer...arrrgh! I will install teh magic grease as the swivel assy had only about an ounce of gear oil in it!!! no wonder it was making noise! I had filled them up last year when noise was there, knowing that there was the special grease in there, but... so anyway there is little sign of any leaks but it's going somewher..the seal on the axle towards thediff is NOT there so it was already modded by dealer apparently ayt some time or NEVER had a seal thre? will look at the seal bearing surface on shaft..hmm!
anyway the oil is either splashing into the diff...and not back as maybe diff's little leak is larger than i thought? will have to dig into that too now...
on inspection w/o tearing apart, i can't see damage to the c/v cage or anything, bit can see shiny spots..so at 248000 mies it's about time, huh? :D
hte new cv is very stiff? no lube there, but really a difference between teh two...and teh old does bind on angle..
anyway off to the dealership...

If the hub was so hard to remove perhaps the inner wheel bearing had spun and partially seized on the spindle. Could I suggest you give the spindle surface a bit of a polish before reinstalling and adjust wheel bearings so that their is no end float, but very little preload? The .003'' endfloat that the shop manual recommends IMO is wrong and allows the bearings to turn on the spindle.
Bill.

interesting, but no..not at all the bearing surface wsa pristine! it was all in the dang paper gasket not releasing!! I've had this issue before with the red thick rover paper gaskets...
I went down to dealer and bought the magic cv lube, but they didn't have the req replacement paper gaskets...so i ordered a ser(ok five as they come in a bag of five?? but won't come for a week! arrgh again! we need ot running today, so i used brown paper bag material and aviation gasket goop...i filled the bell of teh cv with the goop, and bolted all together and squirted the rest in th filler home...and am on to the second one now.
When teh correct gaskets come in in a week or two i will tear apart and also install new swival ball seals as i have them, but ther is a worn spot on left ball....half way up front side..a rock or somethig must hve been imbedded in the goop for thousands of miles or ?? anyway it's coming together..and when next apart will also do the swivel preload for teh first time..i am sure they are loose after all these miles!!
