: Rear bumper for FJ60?

I talked to the guy from Renegade Fabrication today and I WANT the +4 rear bumper for my FJ 60. I have one of his bumpers on the rear of my 40 and it is bulletproof. My question is this, with the price tag of basically$1300 would I be better off getting a KayMar and applying the balance to my front Bull Bar? What are the cons of the KayMar?

I have to say the Renegade is the shit. Kaymar is *nice* but you can't go wrong with the Renegade bumper.

By the time you get all the bells and whistles on the Kaymar you will spend $1000.

Go for the one you want the FIRST time!

Will someone please post a pic of what a $1300 bumper looks like please! I've gotta see this with my own eyes.

I dunno how the Renegade bumper compares to the Kaymar in price (I sure didn't pay $1,300 for mine, but then again, I spent several full days working at Renegade, on my bumper and a myriad of other projects), but I *can* tell you that it blows the Kaymar OUT OF THE WATER when it comes to design and quality.

Could someone else build a bumper for cheaper than that? I'm sure it's possible, but the sad fact is, nobody *currently* makes a bumper for the 60 series that compares. For people like me, who do not have the tools/skills to make our own bumper, or who live in the fabricator-free East Coast, this is the obvious choice.

If you want a strong, practical bumper for your 60 series, you don't have many off-the-shelf options. The rear ARB bumper is nothing more than a replacement for the stock bumper, it's not very strong and does not come with provisions for swingouts. The Stout bumper (not even sure if they're still available) is a flaming POS, it's about twice as heavy as it needs to be and comes with one HUGE swingout that is very impractical. Overall the Stout construction is fantastic but the design is very poor. Then you have the Kaymar, which is mass-produced. If you don't mind the cheesy chunk of aluminum diamond plate, I guess it's not too bad, but it's not the strongest of bumpers, and with the two swingouts, it's up there in price. Up & (Bend) Over has a design, but you basically have to leave your first born child there as copayment. Who else? The only other one that I know of that can be bought off the shelf is the Smittybilt tube bumper, which also doesn't offer any flexibility in terms of accessories.

This is the new high clearance for the FJ40 these ARE NOT $1300 bumpers. I believe they're around $500-600.

This is the one I have on my FJ40. I was sold after I saw a guy drop off a ledge and teh cooler rack hung up and held the whole truck. After we jacked it up and off the rack was still straight.

Dave Custer in Bend, Oregon had some pretty nice designs for FJ60s. I think his company is called Schrapnel Design. He does a lot of work in steel. He builds furniture, show racks, as well as Cruiser stuff. I've only seen one of his bumpers up close and it was pretty nice. I've seen the Renegade Bumpers and they are about the best I've seen on a 60. http://www.angelfire.com/id/v8j60/bumper.html This was my first design. I think it was actually better than my second. The bushing on my second bumper is not as tight as the first one was. I'll probably build a third before I get it exactly the way I want it. Here is a photo of the first one. http://www.nwcruisers.com/runs/NWC052001/5.html

I heard that Dave Custer is incommunicato-
Has anyone talked to him in the last 3 months?

I had a Kaymar on my 1983 60. Good bolt on, but not nearly as stylin' as 60series guy's. The Kaymar does have 5,500# hitch (which is low, a down side on trail truck). It attaches with 14, 1/2" bolts so I doubt it will fall off. I know there are two tire carrier variations. One, that will allow a second on other side and one that more or less centers the spare and WILL NOT take a drivers side second carrier (I had that one). I would get the kaymar if you could price w/ TLCA 10% discount (if MAF will accept). Otherwise, go Renegade.

Does Renegade have a web presence or is there a way to contact them? ALso, is it possible to get the tire carriers for the 40 that MAF sells (or VERY similar;)), without going through MAF. I've stopped into MAF and looked at those tire carriers (was there yesterday) and they are stout. I've been leaning towards the high clearance version but now after hearing of the 40 that got hung up pn the carreir, I'll spend the extra coin and get the cooler version - unless Renegade can hook me up with a similar carrier for the 40 and if its cost effective to go that way. Would I have to go the shop and slave around for awhile too?? :)

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

His number is Renegade Fabrication 602-938-3185. Don't be suprised if he just answers the phone and doesn't identify himself as Renegade Fabrications. As of now the 60 is only used for camping and lite wheeling (famous last words) so I don't know if I need/want all of the beef that is a Renegade bumper on the back. 60SG will confirm that his bumpers are HEAVY.

BTW he is in the process of moving his shop so he may be a little hard to get ahold of. I think the fact that MAF is 35 minutes away and I'll be driving to Phoenix to get one from the manufacturer speaks for itself.

I hear ya!! Maybe I'll have to bid a week of Phoenix layovers so that I can go help build me a tire carrier!! :smokin:

I stopped into MAF yesterday to inquire about sending back my 6-1 headers and bolt on exhaust, still in the box. They want a 30% restocking fee. Yikes!!

I may just have to just list here on the PBB or the LCML instead!

The MAF 4+ stuff does look good, can't wait to see what the stuff at the source is like!!

I owe you a

Actually, this bumper is a LOT lighter than I expected, one of the best things about it. It's also really close to the body, courtesy of the custom rear crossmember. Dunno if this feature made it into the production design, but it's one of the best things about mine.

I got mine in 1999 and other than painting some scrapes, it's in the same condition as when I got it.

Worth EVERY penny in my book.

What sold me on Dave Gore's fabrication (Renegade) was the real-world use. Dave is a wheeler, so every one of his designs is well-tested and incorporates features that are useful. His cages are AWESOME, too!

I talked to him yesterday for about 30 minutes and he was all fired up about these new springs they're working the kinks out of that will move the 40s axle back 4" and give all sorts of mad flex. He threw so much info at me that I got kinda lost amongst the stats and part numbers.:D He also mentioned that if I didn't want to go Dana 60s to swap in a set of FJ60 axles to gain more width which would help the ole MAF buckboard springs flex.

Hey Sloan, you should get in touch with fatkid and Tin Bender, I'm sure they can hook you up ;)

I thought about that but I don't have access to any :bender: to pay for the labor.:) Maybe when I get it painted you can give me the official iontro and I can go from there. I drop her off Monday to get the fender fixed, new door and the holes that rusted through on the roof patched. The guys that are by my house were really reasonable about body work but the paint job was $3500. So I don't neccessarily want to go to Earl Scheib or 1 Day Paint & Body but I also don't want to drop more than $1000 on the paint job for a camping truck.

well the absolute trickest bumper being built is by 4x4labs for the 60 70 80 series can you say hidden latch , no more of these bulky tension latches and has an option for an electric latch accuator like on a hot rod
for sure the cleanest design bar none
i will get some pix up soon . these bumper will be in production within weeks , the protoypes are just finished so there may be a group purchase price on the first run . if you buy any other bumper you will regret it after seeing this design :D
