ok got the flywheel back, looks great, should have the cab off and the old tranny out this weekend. hope to clean and paint the frame too.
But i ran into 3 problems.
- anyone got a part number for the flywheel to crank bolts for a 351m/400m
- also what size clutch do i need. I have a flywheel with the 180 tooth ring gear. The bolt pattern is 3 sets of two holes each evenly spaced. look to be about a 13 inch bolt circle
- lastly i know that the 351/400s have a 28oz imbalance and that is the reason for the large chunk on the back of the flywheel, but how do i know what way to put it on the crankshaft? there is no allignment dowel...????

The flywheel bolts are usually available anywhere as Mr. Gasket parts..or you can order ARPs from Summit or Jegs.
11" Diaphragm clutch
The bolt pattern for the crank to flywheel is not evenly spaced..it only lines up in one position to get all 6 bolts in. No worries.

Carefull bro, you could have a 12" clutch. I think the 351M mostly had the 11" and the 400's had a 12". I have my freshly turned 180 tooth 400 flywheel sitting on my dining room floor with a 12" Centerforce clutch (PN#CF261015) laying on it. I made the mistake of ordering a 11"er to begin with and had to send it back. ARP flywheel bolts are PN#ARP-200-2802, they require you to chamfer the flywheel hole to match the ARP bolt.
For reference this is from a 79 F-250, 400, NP435

Don't forget to check the flywheel bolt clearence to the block on the back side of the crank flange. Like Navajo1 stated, 400 = 12", 351M = 11" clutch assembly.

Wish that was true myself..but I have 4 78/79 trucks (F-150, Bronco, pair of F-250s) with factory 400 4-speeds and all four came with 11" clutches..made more than one return trip to the parts counter over the years when I bought the 12" because that is what I expected to find in there. Of course the 400flywheels are all same as far as balance and tooth count as the 351m flywheels. Some are drilled for both clutch sizes..and some not. In my experience, if there is only one set of clutch bolt holes on the flywheel, its always drilled for the 11" clutch - period. Two different sets of holes - will accept either clutch. I'll go meaure the actual BCD on one of the single-pattern flywheels laying in the shop ans see what the clutch mounting bolt diameter is.
The ONLY truck I've torn down here that did have the 12" in it was a '79 F-350 2wd dually with 400/4-sp

bmc69 I'm not surprised. I've seen things in Fords that go against all documentation. Never say never when it comes to the blue oval.

I know it sounds screwy..but that's one reason I like Henry's stuff so much. You really have to know something to deal with all the variations..none of that pussy "big block, small block,no matter-everything fits everywhere" Chebby thing.:smokin:
