What boxes from other Saginaw shod vehicles will direct replace into my '73 Scout?
It has a 4 1/4 turn box and before I take the existing one apart to get it to center properly, I would like to put in something to get us going. If I could get a quicker box....all the better.
I keep eying up full size and intermediate GM cars...but I would appreciate you fellow farm implement owners to steer this yokel in the right direction.

Nothing that I know of bolts in for a Scout II. Scout boxes are special.
Now they CAN be made into quicker ratio boxes, I have seen a couple box rebuilders that offer it. But I have no idea what components they use.
Actually, you will probably find that for most general use, once its all working properly, the 4.25 turns really isn't that bad.
Summit does sell a steering box "quickener", available in either 30% or 50% reduction/increase. They are a gear ratio box that goes inline with the steering shaft. Never used one, but have been eye balling one for my race truck, but they are like $150 so I'm not ready to gamble just yet.

Thanks for the input, either I will take the box apart to find out why the sector shaft isn't on center , find a boneyard unit, or in the event I find myself knee deep in alligators when I get the box apart, get an exchange unit.
Now at least I know the housing is dedicated to the ScoutII.
PS, after dropping the box I clearly see the sector shaft twisted...now to get a replacement....

sorry for the hijack:D

I am not aware of a direct replacement, but I have seen a bigger box that would work. I actually seen one about 3 years ago at Pullnsave in Denver. What got my attention was it had a obviously larger piston in it compared to the Scout box. As us larger tire guys knows, a built up Scout power steering pump still wont turn big tires properly, especially when locked up. This box was on a Dodge light duty truck I am for certain and I think it was 2 wheel drive. It did mount to the outside of the frame and had the arm to the front. I am confident it would have worked for a Scout II with some minor fabbing.
If I can find another one, I will install it. :)
