Looking for some opinions on the Mini spool versus the Full. I guess this could be a beginner question but, I wanted honest opinions on guys who run them. I'm looking to add one to the Dana 44 I installed in the front of my Jeep.

Thanks,
Matt

Full spool would be a stronger set up and more permanent, the mini would be semi temporary as it would be easier to go back to stock by putting the spyder gears back in but weaker with stock carrier..I have a mini spool with a 44 like you,If I had more money I would have went with a Detroit though.

Full spool hands down...much stronger than a mini spool.

Full spool was what I was thinking but, I was told I would have trouble steering. Is it that noticable?

Hard to say... how often do you steer?

IMO, for the price and bother of setting up a full spool, I'd consider a used lockright or similar. A smidge more tolerable.

If you've got hubs, why not pull the carrier and weld it? No difference performance-wise and it's cheaper and probably stronger than a mini spool.

I've got a buddy that's been running an aussie-locker for a couple years now in his front 44 on 38.5 sxs w/ an LT-1. It appears to be holding up quite well.

The difference in steering w/ a full spool is noticeable when you have the hubs locked in and you're trying to make tight maneuvers. Be prepared to make multi-point turns.

It doesn't matter if you have a minispool, a full spool or a welded diff - the effect is exactly the same and the steering will be just as hard regardless.
