I was thinking of getting rid of the vacuum lines that engage the 4WD, and installing a homemade posilock, and welding the front diff. I was wondering if anybody else had done this, and how it worked off road and on road, how well does it steer? does it affect on-road at all? thanks

if you weld this i wouldn't plan on driving it on the street unless you have lockout hubs.

If ya don't know whats broke, don't ask us how to fix it.

We don't fix Dana 30's

Its better not to ask about Dana 30's at all

Yes 10 bolts are gay, but they are better than Dana 30's

Quoted from the "NEWBIES READ THIS FIRST" section of the FAQ'S at the top of this page. You should have read it before posting. :flipoff2:

I run with a d30 welded with 33".. yes, its a d30 but welding is free.

ok to answer your questions:

On the road if you have the front discounected you don't even know its welded, as long as you have good ujoints in the front drive shaft.

Off road its great just may have to discounect to turn sharp. and easy on the gas with big tires on the rocks

I also have the x97... whatever ujoints in the d30.

I welded mine and have the posi lock in my dd 89xj... Really like it. In 4wd driving with the axle NOT connected it pulls during acceleration and when you get off the gas. Does not pull when both wheels are driving.Great in snow and muck. I did it last fall for fun. I plan on changing gears so I didn't care if it grenaded ... so far so good.
Overall I love it and would do it again.
BTW you don't need locking hubs if you have the disconnect don't listen to that guy either he can't read or doesn't know.

This works pretty well on vac disconnect D44's of the flavor found in 83 & 84 wagoneers, provided you install lockouts.

Don't do it...If any thing put in a $200 Lunch box locker(Aus, EZ, Lock-right)..... They will give a bit more then a spool.... I wheel the EZ one but I Have TJ shafts and a light foot. I know I'm on a time line with the D30 and it will need replaced as soon as I can...

You should start saving for a new axle up front no matter what you do. I know I am.

I love it when people reply to shit they haven't a FAWKIN CLUE about.

I say DO IT. You'll either want to remove your front DS or possibly just get it ballanced. Other than front DS vibes, you won't know it's locked untill you engage the shift fork.

My buddy has his YJ like this. He leaves his front DS out until he heads to the trail. Being welded, he can tag along on 31". He just cant take hard lines.

I'm guessing the whole point of your post is really just fishing for ideas for a homemade posi-lock. Sorry, wish I could help. I took my axle out when that became a problem.

why waste the wire on a 30  :flipoff2:

Skip the posi lock, and just go with TJ shafts, cheap junkyard ones. You can find complete TJ axles for about $100 or less, look on classifieds here as well. Very common swap, better than dealing with the two piece crap at all, plus stronger u-joint (You Yj most likely has a 267).

For the posi, you can rig a posi like setup for about $50 home brewd or less if you insist on keeping the two piece shafts. Oh, and search :flipoff2: welding a 30 has been discussed a bizzilion times, and teh consensus is it will break, the only question is, when :)

yeah, wonderful when people really dont know what they are talking about...lock out hubs...:flipoff2:

anyway, I know how to do the posi, I am planning on doing it either way to get rid of the vacuum crap, I just wanted to hear from somebody first hand who did it. I have a 350 behind it, soooo I probably wont do it, save my D30 as long as I can with a 350, at least til I can afford a new axle. anyway, thanks.

I did it to mine (TJ with XJ D30), most of my problems came from my homebrew posi-lock not fully engauging.

Yeah there are a shitload of people who have no clue what you are talking about. :shaking: The lockouts... The EZ Locker... It's sad.

The YJ vs. TJ shaft thing can be dealt with, you can get 297x YJ shafts then you have the best of both worlds. The disco shafts are monsters and the shift collar acts like a fuse sometimes so IMO I have no more worrys they anyone else with 35"s+ and a LP D44.

Now I will say this, you and I are both living on borrowed time, sure it's cool that we can get cheap replacements at every junkyard for next to nothing but not breaking is IMO cooler. I'm bypassing the D44 BS and the D60 $$ and going straight to rockwells.

yeah, I'll think about it, maybe if I come across a large amount of money, and need to...."find a reason to replace my D30" I'll weld it up and wait until it breaks, then get 44's or something, I definitly dont need rockwells with 33-35" tires haha

Yeah, I love how people who don't know respond. My first line .... I did it.
I really like it but who knows maybe I don't care if it breaks, maybe I'm trying to break it. I have lots of parts and if it does break well, maybe the misses will let me pony up for a good 44.

A local guy welded the diffs on a YJ he got for free. He had 31s on it and broke the 30 into a million peices backing out of a foot of mud.

throw that peice of shit out, seriously

haha, that pretty bad, its very funny the mixed opinions about the D30, I was told a million times it will hold up to a chevy 350 haha, well....we will see haha, its more fun when stuff breaks....

I welded my posi lokey and then welded a big D60 ujoint to my axels so they wont break off from the axel or be able to wiggle around and break. But I need help cause for some reason I can't turn very easy without my back tires sprinning and my front stoped.

Any ideas? I should get a 9.9 for the front shouldn't I?

I read somewhere taht you might be looking to make a posi-lock.... it's easy. you can search around for it on the internet... but all it takes is a lawn mower throtle adjuster and a bike break cable... ez shit for like 20 bucks
