I drove my scout today (WOHOOO!!!) to the carwash to degrease it before I tear into it this weekend.
On the way there (IE: after it warmed up) it backfired once when I got on the gas a little and once when I was jsut cruising along.
And then on the way back it backfired while cruising along again and once *real bad* (killed the engine for 2 seconds) while I got on the gas again.
I've never had a vehicle backfire on me before (even on a new engine that I've built). I adjusted the timing a little before I headed back (IE: when it got killed) so I suppose that wasn't the answer.
I need some tips, hints, advice, help.....etc.
Thanks in advance.

Fuel slosh? Check your float level.

Does the ignition cut out when it backfires?
DBC.
Dreaded Bulkhead Connector.
Trace the starter wires up to the firewall where it enters the cabin by one of two bulkhead connectors.
Clean the connector and make sure you have good contact.
My carb doesn't flood or bauble when I'm climbing stuff, but a good bounce will knock the DBC enough to lose the ignition for a moment, which causes forward progress to pause for a moment - sometimes I can pull out of it, sometimes not.
Still haven't gotten around to rewiring it.. it's been behaving lately..

Well I don't think it's fuel slosh, when I set-up this carb (fresh rebuild a month and a half ago) I purposely set the float a tad low. Plus this all happened on flat paved road.
I will check the BHC. I'm guessing the ignition did cut out, since it died that one time.
Thanks for the tip. Now that I think about it, the way it kept cutting out was as though the key was being turned off.

I think car wash is the tip here.
Got something wet ignition related or something is going bad...
Pickup coil,spark box ,coil,distribtor.

That would make sense, except that he had the problems before he got to the car wash.
On the way there (IE: after it warmed up) it backfired once when I got on the gas a little and once when I was just cruising along.
It pretty much has to be ignition, since he ruled out fuel slosh. But, mine has not been one to backfire, so I don't have any ideas. I suppose something in one of the cylinders could be causing preignition, hot spot on the piston, spark plug, etc. Something glowing that sets off the fuel, but it is so intermittent that I don't really think that is it. My gold box did not cause backfires when it went out. it caused no fire. :0 And, my coil just gave poor performance when it was going out, hard starting, no power etc. Bad timing, for some reason or other seems most likely. Maybe the distributor is worn allowing it to flop around a little/ Doesn't take much. I had to replace mine a couple years ago. Tried to time it, but the timing was all over the place. Took it to a shop, they couldn't time it either. Dizzy was so worn you could rock it by hand. New dizzy fixed the problem.

losse plug wire, fould plug, crose fire look when it's dark. Do you also notic a miss at all or most RPMs. What year is your scout does it have a gold box :barf:
