Well i cant seem to get any straight answers off of Zuwharrie, so I figured I'd try here.

I have an 88 samurai, spoa, and other crap. I bought it and both front and rear axles are locked. The rear is fine, but the front has been having problems.
The front axle started popping. It pops in 4wd with hubs locked when under hard load, such as just starting from a stop, going over an obstacle, or turning.
The sound comes from, what seems like the outer ends of the axle. It goes back and forth between drivers and passengers side.
I started to work on it, and i saw that on the passengers side all 6 lockout hub mounting bolts were bent, and halfway unscrewed. The drivers side bolts were all broken off. That problem i assume was because there were no tapered washers.
I disassembled and regreased the birfs and wheel bearings. Then i got new bolts , tapered washers, and lockwashers and greased and installed the hubs.
I went out for another try, and they are still popping. I dont know what the problem could be. I am thinking the lockright is broken, or there is something internally wrong with the hubs.

Here is one weird thing i noticed... The rear axle works fine, and when lifted in the air, and spinning one tire, the driveshaft spins, the differential clicks, and the other wheel does not spin. The front axle on the other hand, when one wheel is spun, the differential clicks and neither the driveshaft or the other wheel spins. Could that be a problem?

Thanks everyone and sorry for the long post. Here is some of my previous topics about it on zuwharrie: http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,36028.0.html

check your axle housing for straightness, it sounds like your locker may be slightly misaligned, causing it to slip a bit and the resulting shock load is taking out your hub bolts.

It is a lockright i assume.
Is there a good way to check how straight it is?

Check your T-case as well. I was having problems that sounded exactly like yours and it ended up being the front output shaft on my t-case was slipping. I even took my locker out and put a welded front in just to double check the front axle, and it still done it. On the trail you could see one tire ratchet when it would pop which led everyone to believe it was a locker/axle problem.

I shimmed it so that it would engage the splines better and it stopped.

check the springs on the lockrite.. and the shims in the diff.. or you might have a bent shaft in the transfercase.

to check the housing, i usually just bolt on some stock wheels with no tires on them. then measure across the top and bottom. if the housing is straight, it will measure the same. -marty
