My stock-to-the-bone daily driver K1500's transmission is acting up. I'm a GM idiot so all I know is that it's 3spd auto w/ overdive behind a 305.
It is winding up in all gears, shifts hard between 1 and 2, shifts like it's slipping between 2 and 3, and then shifts smooth into 4th (OD). When downshifting up a hill it seems to be slipping. There's no pick up when it downshifts, just a lot of high revs. Any thoughts? I knew I should have got a 5spd, I hate autos.

Is it a 2WD or 4WD...What year?...either way you have a 700R trans. how many miles? need more info....:confused:

First, check the fluid level and the color.
Pink=good
dark red=time for a flush
brown/black=you're screwed-rebuild/replace
any green or white liquid=You're screwed-new radiator + tranny rebuild
Then post back about what year your truck is. This tranny is obviously a TH700R-4 or 4L60 since it has OD and is in a 1/2-ton, but how it shifts depends on whether is has a TV cable or is electronic (4L60E).

I'm an idiot, forgot to post the year. It's a '93 w/ 4WD and it has 179K miles however the engine and tranny were rebuilt at 150K...at least that's hat I was told. The engine was definitely rebuilt because it runs too damn good for the much mileage.
The fluid color is kinda red more then pink, I'll try flushing the fluid and see what happens. It could have got burnt because I had a t-stat problem right before this happened and the temp got up there.

Aha. An overheating engine is a good way to toast a tranny, since the transmission is generally cooled with the engine radiator. This is part of why it is such a good idea to use an auxillary transmission cooler (after the radiator) unless you live somewhere like Anchorage.
You should drop the pan and take a look at what's in it-that can give you a lot of clues. Also a good time for a new filter.

Took a look at the fluid and it's pretty well smoked. Drove it once in the past week and was working fine. Gonna change the fluid and see what happens. 'till then, I'm stuck driving my Jeep to work...aah, the looks I get from commuters. :D

If it makes you feel any better, I once got a year with no problems :) out of a tranny after finding smelly dark brown fluid inside and flushing it out. After that, the converter started to puke parts through the transmission. :(
