View Full Version : 318 and sammy drivetrain
Hi,
I have a 318 that has roughly 175 hp that I would like to swap into my samurai.
1st= I will probably be swapping in a dodge auto as well. But will the sammy tranny hold up to it? I am not abusive on my stuff.
2nd= Will the T-case hold up? It has the 4.9 gears Most important to me.
3rd= Will the axles die right off? I have 31's with loc-right. Toys are in the future.
I kinda want to do this step by step, so I get to enjoy it a bit. I just want to know what you all have experienced in the past.
Thanks guys

the transfercase might take it for a while but the axles no the front will brake first but as long as your nice on it. it should last untill toy axles..
Thanks, So if the t-case wont, the tranny wont either I assume. Thanks for the reply. I'm checking out my options.

sami tranny behind 318???? LoL good luck man maybe AA or novak will custom machine a $1000 adapter, and then you can make it bolt up , but 10 minutes later when it blows your screwed. IF you gonna do a v8 beef up everything else

this makes me think of a friend of mine, and he's volvo 740 Turbo.
original=180hp
after mod's=420+hp (it was impossible to measure in a bench, tyres started spinning)
the gearbox only lasted 1&2 gear, when putting in 3'rd gear a nasty sound appeared.....
i'm sure the 318 will break the transfer case easily -remember it has a lot of torqe
but the transfer case will last (for a while at least) with a volvo B-20 or B230
this and toyota axles is a "popular" (read inexpensive) upgrade here in Norway

Have you done any measuring yet? A 318 is not small.
Travis..
I am working on some measuring right now. It is pretty tight. I am not sure what I am going to do, because the funds are a bit tight right now. I don't think there would be room if I did a 318/tranny/t-case swap. It would be about ready to bolt up to the rear axle by the time all that was in there.:shaking: I would like to at least put some toyota axles under it. I am looking for a set now. I may just keep the rest how it is. I can see where this could get expensive really quick. The only problem is, I can't seem to find an old toyota:confused:

i aways hate to see people talk about doing some type of unconventional motor swap and then also say money is tight in the very next sentence. sounds to me like a project that may never get finished. this type of motor swap is never as cheap as one might originally expect. not to mention there are better choices to swap in if you are looking for that level of power.
I just decided that I don't want to swap in the 318 because the rest of the drivtrain would not hold up. I allready have a 318, and some fab skills. I just don't want to upgrade everything else yet. Especially since I just got the gears for the t-case. I was going to use a dodge tranny anyway, but I'll just try and do the toy's for now, and enjoy it!:D
