Anyone know if the PTO from the side of a SM420 will fit a SM465 or NP205 t-case without having to change the gear or anything.... i have one sitting here, and i am curious to how I can use it.

More than likely not, I ran into this same prob with my PTO setup, its a pita to find the right one, The Pto u have might fit the 465 but not the 205, I had one for an Sm465, and wanted to install it on the 205, but it was completley different, I had to buy a new one for the 205, but I am still using the one on the 4 speed for the front winch, the Pto on the 205 runs the rear winch, and is nice because i can select from 4 different gears to run it at different speeds, Just place the PTO over the slot and see if the gears mesh properly, you might have to use a small spacer but you should be able to tell if its gonna work for you, If you have any questions just ask, I'll try to help as best I can, and good luck

speaking of these, where can they be found? specifically one for a 205?

big truck places can get them. i'm sure there are others.

also, check the junkyards. i've seen a few 1 ton dump trucks with the pto runnin the hydraulics for the bed.

I get all my PTOS at a company called Fleetpride, they are nationwide so you should have one in your area, But check the junkyards first, but make sure the PTO is the right one, PTOs that turn hydraulic pumps usually turn too fast for a winch and you wont have much power, there are usually 5 different ratios available for each application, so make sure your getting somthing u can use

i was under the assumption that all pto's mounted the same b/c they all share the same 6 bolt mounting pattern. the pto cover on an sm465 and a 205 look identical, so why won't they interchange?

The bolts will line up, but the actual gears are different.

Not everything has the 6 bolt cover, either. Big truck stuff is different (mostly, some of the big Allison automatics still have the 6 bolt cover), and I have a divorced NP201 transfer case that has a 9 or 10 bolt pto cover. The Rockwell T221 also has an oddball shaped one.

Just saw this thread and figured I would chime in...

Anyway, I work on hydraulics every day (1 tons to tri axles and anything else). Alot of the trucks are pretty standard...usually 6 bolts on the big trucks and even the light pickups. However, the gearsets are different. There are also 8 bolt pto's which are a bit less common and I have seen alot of funky stuff on older or oddball equipment. Alot of the big trucks running C102 style pumps have a bigger PTO mounting flange and on some of these you see adaptor plates where the pto would mount to the smaller style without the plate.

I will try and check for you tommorow but if you try a search on the net (parker/chelsea probably would probably have an application table) and you oughta find what you need.

sorry to hijack, again, but if i wanted to have a PTO winch, is it shaft or hydralic driven? i really dont know anything about it.

It's shaft driven.... usually... Although I suppose a guy could run a hyd. pump instead and then run a hyd winch too...

Log on to Parker/Chelsea site. It will explain your options. They can be shaft drive or direct couple hydraulic--air, electric, or manual shift--face towards front or rear, single speed, two speed , reversable. The size, pitch, and tooth counts of the transmissions dictate which PTO gears need to be used. Most likely a pto for the CH465 will be the easiest to find used. Also know that there are Muncie and PTO brand units out there as well and when in doubt make your decision based on how easy it is to get repair parts.

... and when in doubt make your decision based on how easy it is to get repair parts.Um, exactly how would one make a PTO parts availablility determination?

Not much different than buying a car or lawn mower. Why would you buy an Issetta for a daily driver when you can drive accross the US and not find a dealer?
