: Reverse shackle
Rock Tractor 04-18-2006, 12:50 PM Me and IHOJeff installed IHonlyNorth's (http://www.ihonlynorth.com) reverse shackle kit. This kit is awesome. We increased the wheel base by about three inches and were able to keep the same pinion angle.

This is a proto type kit that will be on the market soon. Alot simpler to install then coils.
ih4ever 04-18-2006, 05:54 PM why the fuck does every body call me a newb?? is there some type of fuckin set number of posts you have to have?? shit!!
well a lot simpler doesnt always mean better... some things work for people, while other things work for other people. coils are a much better ride and flex

I have seen my last bent leaf when I got rid of HOS GenI and it's front shackle set-up.
I think it looks fairly straight forward. Will the kit include "templates" for the locating of the the frame thru-holes? I have noticed that is what most peoples hang ups are from...
I think you guys are looking good.

Brandon 04-18-2006, 09:20 PM what makes it a kit over a couple hangers and a couple pieces of tubing?
Just curious..
Will this kit be avaliable in a 1 ton running gear version?
I have Rancho 44044 2 1/2" wide springs up front, and the Chevy D60F is a about an inch wider then the Scout II frame.

I still have a short list of some things to do...
You going to the clean-up? Hooper?

290, does your Ranchos sit flat under the weight of the front end or do they have an pos/neg arch to them? I need springs that are flat so that is why I am asking.
Where can I see a pic of the RS kit? If it is posted on here I can not see it for some reason. :)

If anyone needs some extra S-shaped leaf springs, I have a few from my shackle-forward days..
I had a lot less driveshaft issues then, but a lot more frequently broken springs..
ihojeff 04-19-2006, 08:03 AM Being a prototype kit I don't have a pic showing all thats included. It will be for Scout 2" wide springs only. If I get enough interest I will have a kit made for wider 2 1/2" springs. Expect the kit to cost around $300 which is competetive to other kits on the market. Will include the shackles, frame bushing and sleeve, front fangs with added gussets, 3' tube(to connect the two fangs), hardware, and possibly a holesaw and pilot drill bit. What seperates my kits from others is that if you want you can retain your stock front bumper and weld the fangs on just behind it or move the fangs all the way to the front of the frame for more clearance between the tire and back of the wheel well if so desired. Before I offer this kit to the open market I want make sure it was - A.- Easy to install and B.- Take a dam good pounding. Rocktractors Scout was the perfect rig for this as he uses - uhm I mean abuses:D - his rig.

Yes they sit very flat, about an 1-2" arc but mine are used, new ones might gain you an inch more arc which would be good. I don't have the winch on there yet so I might need to rework the pack to keep a little arch. ( I have several piles of springs packs to pick from :shaking: )
The only pics are of Rocktractor's junk.
I went by Jeff's shop on Monday to pick up an oil pan, and saw them installing the kit. I like how Jeff's design has a bar going through the front hangers tying them together for extra strength. :smokin:

That sounds good about the springs. I think that may work for me.
The bar design sounds like what I did to mine also. :smokin:
I am working on getting a shopping list made up for the Wife's SSII Scout buildup. RS will be done on her rig too.

tsm1mt 04-19-2006, 10:57 AM there would be no debates if people would just run shackles forward and reverse. best of both worlds:flipoff2:
Yep, shackles on both ends and some links would do it.
Of course, then we could get into the "shackle forward on 1/4 eliptical" vs "shackle to the rear 1/4 eliptical" depates..
Shackle forward would probably be best, so the weight of the spring pack is at the center of the vehicle, not the ends.. but then it still depends on how you want your polar moment of inertia to be.. back to preference. :D
Brandon 04-19-2006, 10:58 AM Shackles are :rainbow: go with coils.
can I trade the sets I just bought from you for coils? :grinpimp:
I'd like coils but springs work, when I run out of other things to do I will do coils
Hooper 04-19-2006, 02:41 PM Rusty is right. I messed up my front end pretty good a couple months back.
Still not sure how. It was on a snow run. I think I must have run into a tree trunk buried under the snow, or else I may have just been giving it too much of hte happy pedal... In any case, I sheared a center pin off, right at the head, twisted my ubolt plates, knocked everything cattywumpus, and bent the heck out of an already bent spring...
Got it pretty much back together now. I need to run down a power steering fluid leak... I go throug a reservoir of fluid a week when I drive it.. but I am pretty sure it is the output shaft, so I will pop the pitman off and replace that seal... see if that does it...
It was a pretty good snow wheeling trip though, so the breakage was worth it. Got to drive right by a CJ on 38's who was just spinning his wheels, past a toyota pickup and a couple grand cherokees all struggling through the snow...
We broke trail for a few miles and then called it quits and got busy with the real fun, sledding with the kids... Never saw the rest of those rigs again, I guess they turned around and went back down...
Snow was nasty... multiple layers of different textures, with a rock hard ice base... You had to get on top of the snow and stay there, because there was NO traction on the ice layer underneath... add to that the really deep ice rut in the middle... ended up being one of those trails where you would climb on top of the snow, run a bit, and then break through.. I ran my tires down to about 5 lbs or so.. maybe less.. hard to say, so I had to take it easy and not peel them off the bead, on top of everything else..
But, it is sunny weather now.. time for some camping... took the top and doors off... still need a bit more snow to melt up there, snow level is still pretty low, and then I will be packing the tent and sleeping bags into the truck for some long weekends...

I don't remember seeing any IH Fullsizes with a forward shackle from the factory.. they're ALL rear shackle (or IFS).

Yep. Looked a lot like that..
So, when they loaded your truck, did the idiot fork lift driver set the whole load down right at the end of the bed, half on the tailgate, half inside? He did that and I half expected the back end of the bed to fold right off....
Then, he pushed it the rest of the way into the bed, sliding it on the bed... <sigh>
You look a little light in the nose... ;)
I had him center the load over the rear axle. Next time, I think I will have him move it forward a foot or so...
BTW, with those exta blocks you had in there, the loose blocks, I bet you were well over 5k with that load... ;)

REDDMANIAC 04-21-2006, 06:41 AM I did my reverse shackle as Will March did, a no lift. I really need to do the shackle mount into frame rail versus the shackle mount welded to frame rail.
Rock Tractor 06-07-2006, 01:00 PM The revese shackle is much better then the shackle forward setup. The rig hauled my trailer with Rock up and down slabs with crevices, over rocks and anything else in its way. Guess what? NO BENT SPRINGS. It also climbed much better:smokin:

binderbart 06-08-2006, 01:03 PM I did the reverse shackle on my terra (will-marsh). I like the way it handles and it is mostly driven on-road, the only offroad being to cut firewood or a little mud running up and down B-service roads.
The only thing I don't like is the pinion pointing down. I welded the old spring mounts to the frame, now I'm thinking thru the frame is the way to go. Who sells a kit for this?
ihochad 06-08-2006, 01:14 PM Soon, Jeff will be. Mine is the next on the list to get a proto set. It will be driven mostly on road. I do plan on making it capable but not hard core, I plan on running it on the con this Sept. but that is as "hardcore" as I am going to go with it. Mostly play with the family and light runs. I have driven several RS scouts and coutless FS scouts and the RS is the way to go for stablity and drivablity. And yes through the frame is the way to go hands down.
Brandon 06-08-2006, 01:22 PM I've been truly impressed with the road manners of my non RS hoopty SII but then again it rides on stock wheels and tires ;)
http://whiteknucklemotorsports.net/gallery2/d/5112-2/2006_june4_ScoutII_+004.jpg
I do think it rides better than our coil suspension ZJ though!
My trail rigs (3 of em now) have all been RS so I really don't have anything to compare it with. It seems that the concensus isn't so much the ride as it is just not bending springs on rocks but who knows..
