California leads the nation in Wilderness designated as a percentage of total lands managed by the government, and in regulations that protect and safeguard the wild quality of our public lands, including those not designated as Wilderness. The state has considerable additional wild land reserves managed as State and Private preserves under guidelines similar to designated Wilderness. We have enough designated Wilderness, as only a very small segment of the population benefits from this restrictive land management. The opportunity to visit Wilderness is limited to only the public that can afford week long vacations, and only to those in superior physical and fiscal health. Restrictive Wilderness guidelines are unfair to the general population of California who value the opportunity to enjoy these lands as an affordable vacation opportunity. I urge you to work for a land management designation that will protect the wild character of the land, while providing affordable public off-highway vehicle (OHV) access.
