Check out the KELLEY BLUE BOOK (www.kelleybluebook.com) and see what it "books" out at. There are two different ways you can have it valued ... Private Party or Wholesale(I think). Just because he "wants" $8K doesn't mean its worth it. Does he have a problem with you taking it to your mechanic and have it checked out?!? I'd check the brakes, clutch, alignment, pre-smog test, compression, etc.

Let's say he reeeally has to sell it and it books close to $8K anyhow, if you waive $7 - $7.5K under his nose he'll most likely jump. A couple things to help you figure if he will jump... How long has it been up for sale? How bad does he need to sell it? How good of shape did your mechanic find it to be in? Did you run a CarFax on it? IF it books lower, or much lower than $8K, you could still make him an offer based on print outs from the Kelley Blue Book page. Use your head and test the waters. What have you got to lose?

The guy will take $7,750, saw the payment book (owes 7820.??, he is going to pay the difference) to get the bank phone number. I don't assume that either. His next payment of 256.84 is due on the 16th.

I test drove it last night. You are right, it isn't a good deal, it is a great deal.

I have about 3K I can spend on it after I get it so the first couple things will be SYE, 1.5" Ash blank body lift, 2.5" suspension (to start) and the 31 x 10.5 (dounuts, I know, but they are free right now) that are in the shed. I have 4.11 gears in the same shed for the same time period 30 and 35. They will be going in. Homemade rock rails from angle iron. Some homemade skids.

That should leave me with about 2500 to play with after that.

Oh the possiblities are endless when you metal fabbing equipment. :D

I probably will get a drop pitman, another track bar (or fab one) and put on about 8" and skip all the lost money in between.

I know of a slightly used set of 36." I have been wanting to put them on something.

Yes, front and rear. Chuck the rear in the trash. You can tell a slight handling difference with the front off. Buy a 3" x 7/16" cleavis pin to replace the bolt on the axle bracket. Pull the pin when wheeling, pin it back for the road. Or ditch the front too, it's really not critical.
Watch the tire size on that D35, I wouldn't go bigger than 33's. 36's will never fit with 2.5" lift, 33's really won't either.

Oh yeah, for Gawd's sake, take that poor top off :eek: :D

$8k for a 7-8 year old YJ with no mods. I personally don't see the bargain. You can find unmodified 97-99 TJ's w/ 2.5L for a similar price in this area. I wouldn't think the upgraded engine is worth it to drive around with square headlights.:rasta: There are plenty of people that ask for more $$, but I don't hear of many that actually get it.

And, why would you want to have a payment on a vehicle that is 7 years old? Surely by the time it's paid off, it will be :skull: .

Seriously though, it really depends on your area of the country and your personal preferences. If someone asks $x,xxx and someone pays $x,xxx then it was worth the money to someone.

i think the key is that this is a very Jeep populated area and people pay some really crazy prices. 2 friends have paid 1x,xxx for 97 with more mile than the one I am talking about and with the 2.5. They are happy, or were, to pay that for them. Prices are high around here. It is all retired people that would happily pay 4x,xxx for a used BMW and then pay X,XXX to have some one put a new motor in it just so they have piece of mind. Considering this area has an average income of 35,xxx/ year I guess what I found was a good price.

I wait for the good deals and this is the best price I have seen on something that has been takin care of. I mean really takin care of, the guy told me that he brought it in everytime it rain or snowed like it was acid or something. Hell my care is so stripped out that I don't even bother with the windows a night. :D

You are right though. The area has a lot to do with it.

But we were in FL a couple months back and I still couldn't find any cheap vehicles that had 4wd.

SOunds like the"book" vs. "asking price" is in a good ratio. And 7% interest bad really isn't anything to sneeze at. If that is the rig you want it sounds like the $$$ is in the right range.

Go get it and then go GET IT!!
